Our Story
After recovering from cancer, Scott Hamilton, an Olympic gold medalist in figure skating, identified three “angels” who helped him through his journey: his Cleveland Clinic oncologist, his oncology nurse and his family and friends.
What he felt was missing was a fourth angel — someone who had experienced cancer firsthand and could truly understand what this journey was like. To fill that gap, Scott envisioned a program where cancer survivors could connect with patients and caregivers to talk openly about their shared experiences. This idea eventually led to the creation of the 4th Angel Mentoring Program.
What Is the 4th Angel Mentoring Program?
Through the 4th Angel Mentoring Program, you and your caregivers are connected with a trained volunteer mentor who personally knows what it’s like to be diagnosed with cancer. This innovative and interactive program for adults 18+ focuses on one-on-one connections, matching you with a mentor close to your age who has faced a similar type of cancer. Your mentor offers knowledge, encouragement, hope and compassionate support from someone who truly understands what you’re going through.
How the program works
If you or someone you care for has been diagnosed with cancer, you can request a mentor through the program. After your request, program staff will carefully match you with someone based on diagnosis, age and shared experiences. Your mentor will then contact you to begin providing one-on-one support by phone or email.
Become a 4th Angel mentor
Not all angels have wings and halos. Some angels are people who’ve had their world turned upside down by cancer and now want to share their experience with someone just beginning that journey.
4th Angel mentors are empathetic cancer survivors with firsthand knowledge. They’re positive and supportive, offering encouragement, perspective and understanding to patients and caregivers. By sharing their time and experience, they help bring comfort and reassurance during challenging times.
Does this sound like you? If so, we’d love to hear from you.
