What is the Fit Youth Program?
Fit Youth is for children ages 7-16 whose families are serious about increasing the chance for long term health. Specifically designed for children and parents, the program is for children and teens with a body mass index greater than the 85th percentile for their age. Participant families meet in a group once a week for 90 minutes for 12 weeks. Group leaders include a psychologist, dietitian, and exercise physiologist. How does the program work?
When you join, your family will be in a group with nine other families. Sometimes we meet all together; at other times, children and parents have separate group sessions. The group leaders, including a pediatrician, work with you to help you make changes for healthy bodies and healthy lives. An advantage of being in a group is that other people are going through the same thing as you, and we support and learn from each other. Between meetings, participants keep food journals and exercise logs. Each week, we teach new skills and strategies and encourage setting new goals.
