Overview
Type 2 diabetes is an increasingly prevalent chronic disease that affects ≥12% of the adult US population. An important complication of diabetes is diabetic polyneuropathy, which eventually affects half of all diabetic patients. In many patients, diabetic neuropathy is painful and substantially affects quality of life. In this NICORE-QHS project, we examine the prevalence, demographic characteristics, comorbidities, health care utilization, referral patterns, pain levels, treatment, and quality of life of patients with painful diabetic neuropathy. Electronic health records and Knowledge Program data of all adult patients with diabetes living in the Greater Cleveland area, and followed by a Cleveland Clinic primary care physician, are examined to develop algorithms to identify patients who have developed painful diabetic neuropathy, and to contribute to the Painful Diabetic Neuropathy Retrospective Study. This study will enhance our understanding of the burden of this chronic debilitating disease, and also inform medical and neurological care.
