Follow these Instructions Carefully

*Failure to comply with these instructions may result in a cancellation of your procedure.

  • NO food or drink after midnight the night before your test.
  • You will be sedated for the test and must be accompanied with someone to drive you home.
  • DO NOT take any aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. ibuprofen, aleve, naproxen) for 4 days prior to your exam. If you are on Coumadin, Plavix, Pradaxa or any other blood thinner, ask your physician for additional instructions.
  • Bring a list of your current medications.
  • You will be asked to remove any dentures/partials, eye glasses, hearing aides, or facial piercings for the procedure.
  • A local anesthetic (Cetacaine) may be applied to your throat to help with your gag reflex. Due to this, you will not be able to eat or drink for 1 hour after your procedure.
  • Expect to have an Intravenous device (IV) placed at the facility for your test. This will be used for your sedation.
  • Plan on taking the entire day off work, school, etc.
  • You will not be permitted to drive, drink alcohol, operate machinery or sign any legal documents the entire day of your test due to the sedation you will receive.
  • Plan on being at the facility for about 2-4 hours dependent on the preparation time, procedure time, recovery time, and arrival time of physician.

Special Instructions for after Ablation of Barrett’s Esophagus

Diet to follow after procedure

  • Day 1 (day of procedure, after procedure) – Clear Liquid Diet
    • Fruit juice (no pulp)
    • Gelatin (no red)
    • Fruit ice (no pulp)
    • Popsicle (no pulp)
    • Clear hard candy
    • Black coffee
    • Etc., a more detailed list will be provided after procedure
  • Day 2 and 3 – Full Liquid Diet
    • Milkshake
    • Cream of wheat
    • Coffee with cream
    • Creamed soups
    • Etc., a more detailed list will be provided after procedure
  • Day 4 through 10 (7 days) – Soft Diet
    • No tough meats
    • No chips
    • No raw fruits or vegetables
    • Etc., a more detailed list will be provided after procedure
  • No warm fluids for 24 hours starting after procedure

Medications (prescriptions) you will be given after procedure

  • Proton Pump Inhibitor (Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix, etc.)
    • These medication are used for acid reflux.
    • You should already be taking one of these medications at home or your doctor may prescribe one of these drugs for you the day of the procedure. If you are already on one of these drugs your doctor may increase the dose after your procedure.
    • IMPORTANT: Take this medication until your doctor tells you to stop.
  • Carafate
    • This medication is used to coat your esophagus and prevent ulceration.
    • IMPORTANT: Take this medication until gone.
  • GI Cocktail
    • This medication is used to coat the esophagus. It will help with any pain or discomfort that you may experience when eating after the procedure.
    • Take this medication as needed for discomfort or pain.
  • Zofran ODT
    • This medication is used for nausea.
    • Take this medication as needed for nausea.
  • Liquid Tylenol with Codeine
    • This medication is used for pain.
    • Take this medication as needed for pain.
