Special programs
Learn more below about South Pointe Hospital’s special programs:
Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic Therapy is designed for the individual to perform range of motion, strengthening and balance activities with greater ease due to the buoyancy properties of the water.
After you have been evaluated by your physical therapist in the clinic, aquatics appointment(s) will be set up through one of the secretaries at the South Pointe Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy at the Warrensville Heights Family YMCA, 4433 Northfield Rd., Warrensville Heights, OH 44128
Dysphagia Treatment
Speech therapists conduct dysphagia evaluations and therapy to assist patients in learning strategies to improve the swallowing function. The evaluations may be completed in conjunction with the radiology department.
Dysphagia, or swallowing disorders, can occur after a stroke or other neurological conditions. The speech therapist may recommend exercises to strengthen muscles or improve coordination. Strategies may include diet modifications, postural changes or the use of specialized equipment to help the patient swallow more safely and effectively.
Hand Therapy Program
A wide variety of specialized services are available for the rehabilitation of hand and upper extremity impairment. Conditions treated include traumatic injuries, orthopaedic injuries, burns, industrial accidents, arthritis and neurological progressive disorders. Fabrication and customization splinting are also available.
Kinesiotaping
For more than 25 years, Kinesiotaping has provided comfort and stability for patients as a more gentle approach to rehabilitation. Kinesiotape is a woven tape that offers recoil when stretched. It does not require an under wrap and does not contain latex. It has been proven to enhance function and decrease pain while holding a joint in a position so an overstretched muscle is provided time to shorten. It also assists in relaxing an overused muscle to allow for more ideal alignment through a joint.
Lymphedema Treatment
Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid that results in swelling, most often in the arms and/or legs, although it can affect other parts of the body as well. Specialized lymphedema therapists are available to customize and treat the patient’s individual needs and provide the best functional outcomes.
Manual Therapy
Manual therapy is a skilled, clinical approach using hands-on techniques to diagnose and treat soft tissues and joints to:
- Reduce pain.
- Increase range of motion.
- Reduce inflammation.
- Promote tissue repair.
- Facilitate movement.
- Improve overall function.
Common manual therapy techniques include spinal and joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, myofascial release, muscle energy technique and traction.
McKenzie Method
The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) continues to be the most researched physical therapy approach in the world for the treatment of back, neck and extremity problems. It promotes the body's potential to heal itself without invasive procedures or medication. South Pointe MDT clinicians have a valid method to determine if you will benefit from MDT or if alternate treatments are needed.
Physical Capacity Evaluations
This specialized evaluation refers to a variety of functional tests used to establish a person's work limitations. The evaluation assesses a person's lifting capacity, fine motor speed and body mechanics.
Sports Medicine Program
Our sports medicine program consists of both aerobic and resistive exercises utilizing the latest rehabilitative equipment and modalities. Therapy is available for patients of all ages and diagnoses. Our goal is to get you back in the game fast.
Stroke and Neurological Treatment
An individualized treatment plan is designed to the specific needs of the patient, utilizing the most appropriate therapeutic techniques as the patient moves toward recovery. Comprehensive neurological rehabilitation services – Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy – are delivered in one location to enhance the patient experience. One-on-one personal care promotes maximum patient satisfaction. Services can include the following: Gait Training, Balance Training, Functional Activities, Self-Care Training, Home Management, Articulation and Voice Improvement, Aphasia/Language Therapy and Swallowing Therapy. Our program is beneficial for adults diagnosed with neurological diseases or conditions including but not limited to: Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s Disease.
Wheelchair Evaluations
An assessment of mobility needs related to the use of a wheelchair is conducted. The therapists work closely with specific wheelchair vendors in the community. The patient first contacts the specific wheelchair vendor to schedule a home wheelchair assessment. Once the home vendor assessment is complete, then a therapy assessment is scheduled in the clinic.
