About the Program

About the Program

The Medina Pharmacy Residency (PGY1) is a one-year program that takes place in the unique setting of a progressive community hospital. Residents will help implement and enhance pharmacy services while developing the skills necessary to become integral parts of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. Residents are involved in pharmacy case presentations, journal clubs, and seminar presentations. Other teaching opportunities include medical and nursing in-services, as well as co-precepting introductory and advanced pharmacy students. Residents complete a major research project over the course of the year. Residents may present their research at local, regional, and national pharmacy meetings. In addition to clinical and educational activities, residents are trained to become fully proficient in staffing pharmacy operations.

  • Formal presentations on patient cases, disease states, or other topics of interest to preceptors, students, Medina Hospital pharmacy staff and/or other individuals from Medina Hospital
  • Pharmacy or nursing in-services as needed
  • Didactic lectures to pharmacy students through the teaching certificate program

Meetings and Conferences

Travel to pharmacy professional meetings is an important component of the Medina Hospital pharmacy residency. All residents have the opportunity to attend the ASHP Midyear meeting, during which program recruitment occurs, networking opportunities are available, and each resident may elect to present their research project at the poster session. In addition, residents will have the opportunity to present their research at other local and regional conferences. Resident approval to attend professional conferences will follow departmental and institutional practices. Reimbursement may be subject to restrictions based on departmental and organizational finances.

Staffing Requirements

ASHP guidelines recommend each resident complete a pharmacy practice component of the residency program. At Medina Hospital, this is achieved through staffing pharmacy operations, which is a crucial component to the development of professional practice skills and pharmacy practice distribution skills.

Residents will gain proficiency in medication distribution, incorporation of clinical services, and development of managing personnel. They will also develop insight into the operations, policies, and procedures of an acute care facility.

  • Clinical rotation responsibilities are generally day shift, Monday through Friday
  • Staffing responsibilities include:
    • Two non-consecutive weekend days over a 3-week period (typically one Saturday and one Sunday, followed by one full weekend off)
    • One 4-hour weekday evening shift over a 3-week period (4 hours of wellness time are granted to offset each of these 12-hour shifts)
    • Rotating Cleveland Clinic recognized holidays, averaging one major and one minor holiday for each of the 3 pharmacy residents
  • Residents have every third weekend off and no on-call responsibilities
  • Residents may have opportunities to cover additional pharmacist shifts in concordance with ASHP's Duty Hour Requirements for Pharmacy Residencies, which will be compensated at the standard pharmacist overtime rate
    • NOTE: The primary objective of the residency year relates to the pharmacy residency program objectives. The achievement of these objectives should not be hindered by other activities, including supplemental staffing shifts.

ASHP PGY1 Purpose Statement

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e. BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Application

Application

Admission Requirements

Interested applicants must be PharmD graduates of an accredited college of pharmacy, be eligible for licensure in the State of Ohio (or Florida if applicable) and submit the standard application materials through Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS), including a letter of Intent, CV, three references, and official college transcripts.

We request a minimum of one (two is preferred) of your three references to come from a preceptor who you have worked with in a clinical setting, such as an APPE in acute or ambulatory care. The clinical preceptor should be able to comment on your scope of responsibility, total patient load, level of autonomy, clinical abilities, and organizational and time management skills. All three reference writers should use the standard PhORCAS platform to submit their candidate recommendation.

Please submit all application materials via PhORCAS.

Deadline for receipt of these materials to be considered for an on-site interview is January 2, 2026 by 11:59 p.m.

Cleveland Clinic Health-System Residency sites agree that no person at these sites will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from any residency applicant.

Cleveland Clinic values a culture of engagement and connection throughout the enterprise. We respect and appreciate our similarities and differences; they enable us to better serve our patients, one another, and our global communities.

Please Note: Residency applicants must be authorized for employment in the United States at the time they apply for the residency. Cleveland Clinic Pharmacy does not sponsor applicants for work visas.

Appointments of applicants to residency positions are contingent upon the applicants satisfying certain eligibility requirements [i.e. graduating from an accredited college of pharmacy, obtaining pharmacist licensure in Ohio (for Ohio sites) or Florida (for Florida sites) within 90 days of start date, and successful completion of a pre-employment physical and drug screen; including testing for cotinine and attendance of an onboarding appointment on-site at main campus in Ohio (or a Florida site for Florida programs only) or as otherwise directed by Occupational Health at least 2 weeks prior to the resident's start date].

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate OPT (Optional Practical Training) Visas for the Cleveland Clinic Pharmacy Residency Program as the program extends beyond 12 months. TN (Trade NAFTA) Visas are acceptable; however, the candidate is responsible for the application process and all necessary fees. Cleveland Clinic cannot extend the candidate an employment letter until the candidate has matched with the Cleveland Clinic program and signed an acceptance letter. Any employment letter will state the length of the program (12 months if PGY-1 or PGY-2, 24 months if HSPAL or Pharmacotherapy).

Graduates of international pharmacy schools will be considered if they meet the ASHP criteria for application to residency (“To be eligible for pharmacist licensure, candidates must be graduates or candidates for graduation from an ACPE accredited degree program (or one in the process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the NABP”).

Why Medina?

  • Cleveland Clinic Medina has a reputation for creating well rounded residents that consistently match PGY-2 or obtain jobs right after their PGY-1 year. Having worked 3 years as a Cleveland Clinic intern, I knew I wanted to stay within the health system. I was drawn initially by Medina’s excellent preceptors, range of rotations, and feel of the hospital. The residents are included in all the usual pharmacy tasks, so here at Medina you are seen and not just a number. I was especially impressed by the level of mentoring by the preceptors, who would tailor rotations to meet my goals. I feel challenged at Medina to constantly learn more, grow, and develop my clinical skills. In addition to the pharmacy, there is a lot to do in Medina as well as some really good local food; I haven’t eaten a bad meal yet!

Why Medina?

  • I chose Medina Hospital because of the incredibly welcoming and supportive environment I experienced from the very beginning. The team fosters a culture that is both professional and fun, making each day rewarding and engaging. As a community hospital, the program offers a unique opportunity to form close connections with other healthcare staff outside of the pharmacy department. Medina has a great track record of preparing residents to pursue a PGY2 or enter the workforce in Emergency Medicine, which aligns with my current interests. This tight-knit atmosphere, combined with the dedication to resident growth, made it clear that this was the right place for me to continue my professional development.

Why Medina?

  • Cleveland Clinic Medina Hospital stood out to me as a place where meaningful learning happens through strong preceptor support and active involvement in patient care. I was looking for a residency that would push me to grow clinically while still offering a collaborative and supportive environment. The community hospital setting creates a close-knit environment that allows me to build relationships with patients and other caregivers. The variety of rotations, along with the opportunities to teach, present, and engage in research made Medina the right next step for me in my training.
