What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterized by recurrent seizures that caused by abnormal brain activity. Seizures affect people in different ways. During a seizure, a person may experience feelings of confusion, a loss of consciousness, or uncontrollable tremors and convulsions. Any symptoms that are suggestive of a seizure should be evaluated.

The Pauline Braathen Neurological Center's Epilepsy Center is staffed by experienced epileptologists with specialized training and expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of seizures and epileptic conditions. Our multidisciplinary team is composed of neurologists, neurosurgeons neuroradiologists, pharmacologists, dietitians, neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, nurses and technologists working together to provide comprehensive care for patients with epilepsy and other seizure-related disorders.

The Epilepsy Center’s objectives are to control the patient’s seizures and restore the quality of life. Success can be achieved with an accurate diagnosis and selection of anti-seizure medication(s). In a few carefully evaluated and selected cases, epilepsy surgery may be recommended.
