Overview

Overview

Cleveland Clinic’s Tim O'Connor School of Epilepsy Technology has been designed to provide both didactic and clinical training for those interested in becoming a registered electroencephalogram (EEG) technologist. An electroencephalogram (EEG) finds changes in brain activity which is valuable in diagnosing and treating brain disorders, like epilepsy and other seizure disorders.

Over the course of 12 months, School of Epilepsy Technology enrollees receive on-the-job training from Cleveland Clinic epileptologists and registered EEG technologists. Throughout the duration of the program, participants are employed by Cleveland Clinic, and are provided with knowledge and hands-on clinical experience to prepare for the ABRET Registered EEG Technologist exam. Training takes place in multiple clinical settings, including medical/surgical inpatient units, intensive care units (ICU), Adult Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, and outpatient EEG lab. Completion of training and certification may lead to a full-time EEG technologist position with Cleveland Clinic.

Becoming a registered EEG technologist is only the first step in a long-term career in the epilepsy technologist field. Career advancement can include becoming an EEG reader, magnetoencephalography (MEG) technologist, intra-operative monitoring technologist, and trainer of future EEG technologists.
