Are your symptoms trigeminal neuralgia?
Every year, 150,000 people are diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia — a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve. This nerve — also known as the fifth cranial nerve — helps you chew your food and provides sensation to parts of your face. Simple, everyday things like brushing your teeth, putting on makeup, talking or even smiling can trigger painful attacks to the trigeminal nerve.
This risk assessment will help you determine if what you’re experiencing is trigeminal neuralgia or something else. Here’s what to expect in your assessment:
- We’ll ask you some questions about your symptoms, including:
- What kind of pain you’re having
- What triggers it
- Which parts of your face it affects
- How much it’s impacting your daily life
- After your assessment, you’ll receive results and recommendations on your next steps. You’ll also have the option to print them out.
- If your results show that your pain may be from trigeminal neuralgia, you can choose to have a Cleveland Clinic provider contact you to discuss next steps for a formal evaluation and treatment plan.
Trigeminal neuralgia can worsen over time, so having a proper assessment will help your provider decide whether you might need medications or if it’s time to consider surgery.
