Observational opportunities within the Digestive Disease and Surgery Institute
Breast surgery
Participants will be introduced to procedures such as nipple-sparing mastectomy, lymphaticovenous bypass, fluorescence lymph node mapping and breast reconstruction.
Colorectal surgery
Participants will observe all types of simple and complex colorectal procedures and surgeries, as well as patient histories and physicals. Participants will also attend ward rounds and educational conferences.
Hepatic-pancreatic-biliary surgery
Participants will observe advanced hepatobiliary surgeries, with a particular focus on liver resection and bile duct surgery, and liver transplant surgeries, including living donor surgery. Participants will attend tumor board and multidisciplinary liver transplant committee meetings, where patient candidacy and living donor liver transplant decision-making are conducted.
MIS abdominal wall reconstruction
Participants will learn advanced abdominal wall reconstruction techniques including laparoscopic repairs, complex component separations techniques, parastomal hernia repairs, flank hernia repairs and robotic approaches to hernia repair.
Obesity management
This program focuses on the surgical and clinical case, and the pathophysiological basis of that care, to prepare participants for emerging developments in the field of obesity management.
Gastroenterology
Participants will observe the care of patients with a broad spectrum of gastroenterologic and liver diseases, with exposure to a wide breadth and depth of expertise in the varying subspecialty fields of gastroenterology and hepatology.
General surgery
Participants will observe all types of simple and complex procedures and surgeries.
