Biographical Sketch

Michael W. Kattan, MBA, PhD, is Chairman, Department of Quantitative Health Sciences, at Cleveland Clinic's main campus; Professor of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland; Professor, Division of General Medical Sciences - Oncology, Cancer Center, School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University; and Professor, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University. The Department of Quantitative Health Sciences comprises more than 90 individuals committed to the conduct of quantitative research in healthcare; more detail is available at www.clevelandclinic.org/qhs.  Dr. Kattan graduated with a master's degree in business administration from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and a doctorate of philosophy in business administration from the University of Houston in Texas. He completed training as a postdoctoral fellow in medical informatics at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.

Dr. Kattan is a member of the American Statistical Association and has held several posts with the Society for Medical Decision Making, most recently receiving the Eugene L. Saenger Award for Distinguished Service. He is or has recently been on the editorial boards for 12 journals: Cancer Investigation, Nature Clinical Practice Urology, Medical Decision Making, Clinical Genitourinary Cancer, Urologic Oncology, Frontiers in Urogenital Cancer, Personalized Medicine in Oncology, European Urology, US Urology, Annals of Urology, Journal of Urology, and Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Dr. Kattan has coauthored over 400 articles in peer-reviewed journals. His work is well cited, resulting in his h-index of 70. His research is primarily focused on the development, validation, and use of prediction models. Most of these models are available online, and designed for physician use, at http://rcalc.ccf.org/. Dr. Kattan is also interested in quality of life assessment to support medical decision making (such as utility assessment), decision analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, and comparative effectiveness. He is a standing member of the NIH Epidemiology in Cancer study section.

Within Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Kattan chairs the Outcomes Books Editorial Board. This review panel provides critique and feedback for the various Outcomes books published by Cleveland Clinic and available online at http://my.clevelandclinic.org/about-cleveland-clinic/quality-patient-safety/treatment-outcomes.aspx. In addition, Dr. Kattan is the Principal Investigator for the Optimizing Healthcare Decision Making strategic initiative. This group provides Cleveland Clinic investigators with datasets from the electronic health record for the purposes of inclusion in outcomes books, grant proposals, or research articles.

Furthermore, Dr. Kattan serves on the Commercialization Council for Cleveland Clinic Innovations. The Council advises on internal strategy in promoting innovation and commercialization, as well as approves internal commercialization grants.
