Biographical Sketch
Richard Grimm, DO, is Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory and a staff cardiologist in the Section of Cardiovascular Imaging, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, at Cleveland Clinic Heart and Vascular Institute. He is board-certified in cardiovascular disease. Dr. Grimm is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE). In addition to his primary specialty, echocardiography, Dr. Grimm has a special interest in valvular heart disease, atrial fibrillation and cardiac resynchronization therapy.
An Ohio native, Dr. Grimm received his medical training and degree at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine following a Bachelor's Degree from Hiram College. He completed his clinical training with an internship at Doctors Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where he was named "Intern of the Year." He completed his residency in internal medicine at Cleveland Clinic, where he also received fellowships in Cardiology and Cardiovascular Imaging. In 1994, he was appointed to Cleveland Clinic as a staff cardiologist and served as Program Director of the Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging Fellowship from 1998-2005.
Dr. Grimm has participated in a number of clinical investigations including co-primary investigator in the ACUTE multi-center trial, a study on transesophageal echocardiography-guided management of patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing cardioversion, as well as studies examining the utility of echocardiography in resynchronization therapy for patients with heart failure. In 1993, he received the Cardiology Research Award and in 1994, he was awarded a fellowship grant from the American Heart Association to study pathophysiologic mechanisms of atrial fibrillation, which lead to stroke. In 2002, Dr Grimm was honored with the Distinguished Teacher Award by the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and in 2007, he was recognized with an Innovator Award by Cleveland Clinic.
He has also directed the Cleveland Clinic Core Lab for Echocardiography for several multi-center clinical trials on Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy and has served as an editorial reviewer for such leading publications as Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography and the American Journal of Cardiology and Heart. He has been invited to lecture at national and international symposia and conferences and has published more than 200 manuscripts, book chapters and abstracts on his specialty interests.
Dr. Grimm has been named to "Best Doctors in America" for 2007-2008 and "Best Doctors in Cleveland" for 2006-2007. Dr. Grimm is also a member of the American Heart Association.
In his leisure time, Dr. Grimm enjoys golf and skiing. .
