Overview
Techniques using robotic and laparoscopic surgery have been developed and perfected in the laboratory and operating rooms and are now widely used for prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers, as well as other urologic surgeries. The robotic approach is less invasive compared with open procedures, resulting in less pain and quicker recovery. It allows surgeons to perform many complex operations with more precision, flexibility and control than can be accomplished with conventional techniques.
Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Robotic and Image Guided Surgery has one of the world’s largest group of surgeons with experience in urologic laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Our surgeons have pioneered and remain at the forefront of minimally invasive patient care, research and education.

Our Doctors
Research & Innovations
Cleveland Clinic was one of the nation's first medical centers to offer robotic radical prostatectomy, a minimally invasive surgical treatment for prostate cancer. Robotic-assisted surgery enables surgeons to perform this complex minimally invasive surgery with more precision, offering patients improved outcomes. Our surgeons continue to be the leaders in prostatectomy.
Highlights of the Laparoscopic and Robotic Prostate Surgery program:
- First to offer laparoscopic radical prostatectomy on a routine basis in the United States
- One of the first prostate programs to perform robotic radical prostatectomy in the United States
- First to perform robotic sural nerve transplant for potency preservation
- Pioneered "energy-free" prostatectomy to preserve erections after prostate surgery
- Pioneered real-time ultrasound navigation to make prostatectomy a more precise
- Performed the single-port belly button technique for single port robotic radical prostatectomy
Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute was also the first medical center in Ohio to perform laparoscopic radical surgery for kidney disease. The Clinic now offers robotic and laparoscopic options for a majority of kidney diseases and is the most experienced laparoscopic kidney surgery program in the United States, for benign and malignant kidney cancer. Surgical techniques developed at the Cleveland Clinic are taught nationwide. Cleveland Clinic is also acknowledge worldwide for robotic partial nephrectomy expertise.
Highlights of the Laparoscopic and Robotic Kidney Surgery program:
- Refined technique for centrally located kidney tumors
- First to perform robotic partial nephrectomy in a kidney transplant
- Expertise in partial nephrectomy for multiple tumors in the same kidney or bilateral tumors
Cleveland Clinic urologists performed the world's first laparoscopic removal of a cancerous bladder, followed by surgery to reconstruct the bladder out of intestinal tissue. Our team first refined this technique in the laboratory and now offers the reconstructive bladder cancer surgery to patients. In addition to treating bladder cancer, laparoscopic bladder surgery can also be used to treat urinary incontinence.
Highlights of the Laparoscopic and Robotic Bladder Surgery program:
- First to perform laparoscopic intracorporeal urinary diversion
- Developed a technique for robotic intracorporeal formation of a new bladder from bowel after removal of the bladder for cancer
Highlights of the Stereotactic and Kidney Cryoablation Surgery program:
- One of the most experienced kidney ablation programs in the nation
- Developed stereotactic techniques to improve needle positioning during kidney tumor ablation
Highlights of the Single Port Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery program:
- Developed novel techniques for belly button surgery for kidney, prostate and bladder surgery
- Defined the initial technique of using robotics for single port surgery
