Executive Summary

Julie N. Simon, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, GCNS-BC, CMSRN, is a clinical nurse specialist for the internal medicine, nephrology, ear, nose and throat (ENT) step-down and dermatology inpatient units at Cleveland Clinic main campus. Among her career accomplishments, Simon is most noted for her contributions in the reduction of hospital acquired pressure ulcers and falls. As a result of her educational and monitoring interventions, she has helped cut pressure ulcer rates in half for the hospital, and reduced fall prevalence by approximately 25 percent for one of Cleveland Clinic’s medicine units.

Simon has spent her nursing career at Cleveland Clinic, accepting her first position in 2006, as a staff nurse for renal hypertension and gastroenterology. She also served as a quality and accreditation nurse. Simon’s research efforts have been directed at investigating the functional decline of the elderly in the hospital, assessment of health literacy in the medicine patient, and more. She has presented locally and nationally at conferences for industry associations such as the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS), American Geriatric Society, and Nurses Improving Care For Health System Elders (NICHE). She is a member of NACNS and the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses and is also an active volunteer for the Suicide Prevention Education Alliance of Northeast Ohio.

Leadership

Showcasing her leadership abilities throughout the health system, Simon is an active coordinator of materials, events and programming associated with Cleveland Clinic’s geriatric resource nurse program, co-chairing the program at Cleveland Clinic’s main campus location. She also assists her colleagues and fellow staff members with the coordination of care for targeted patient populations such as heart failure, nutritional insufficiency and laryngeal cancer.

Clinical Practice

Simon’s clinical expertise lies within the areas of internal medicine, nephrology, ENT step-down, dermatology, renal hypertension and gastroenterology.

Teaching

Simon is a long-time mentor for Cleveland Clinic’s geriatric resource nurse (GRN) program. She currently co-facilitates the program at Cleveland Clinic main campus, where she improves nursing knowledge and approaches toward geriatric patient care.

Research, Publications & Presentations

An experienced presenter and publisher of many printed professional works, Bailey has written and spoken on topics ranging from developing better critical paths in healthcare through the combination of best practices and a quantitative approach, implementing a system for care of patients with latex allergies, and the effect of a nursing intervention on caregivers’ satisfaction with information received during the hospital stay.
