Paul Bryson: Welcome to Head and Neck Innovations, a Cleveland Clinic podcast for medical professionals exploring the latest innovations, discoveries, and surgical advances in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

Thanks for joining us for another episode of Head and Neck Innovations. I'm your host, Paul Bryson, Director of the Cleveland Clinic Voice Center. We have a short episode for you today. As we know, many of our listeners are preparing for next week's Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meetings in Chicago. I'm very excited to be going there myself, joined by my colleagues from across the country who are presenting on a wide range of topics. If you want to connect with us while you're at the meeting, stop by Booth 205, that's #205 in the exhibit hall.

We're looking forward to meeting you and connecting with people from around the country, alumni and old friends. For a list of our presentations and research along with more on the innovative research and collaboration opportunities available within the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, please visit ClevelandClinic.org/COSM2024. That's ClevelandClinic.org/COSM2024.

But today I want to specifically shout out some presentations and featured research from our team centered on laryngology and voice that are being presented at this year's meetings. Here's a preview if you're able to join us.

For the American Head and Neck Society, my colleagues, Dr. Eric Lamarre and Dr. Danielle Bottalico are part of research on the impact of frailty on treatment selection and locally advanced laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

My Voice Center and Laryngology colleague, and frequent Head and Neck Innovations Podcast guest, Dr. William Tierney has a paper on the hemodynamic reliability of transnasal humidified rapid insufflation ventilatory exchange, or THRIVE, for microlaryngeal surgery. This novel paper will also feature one of the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine alumni, Dr. Diana Lopez.

Next, Dr. Tierney is also a senior author on a couple posters for Triological and American Broncho Esophageal Association, which includes the topics: “The effect of COVID-19 on psychiatric diagnoses among adults with a tracheostomy: a 10 year analysis,” “Psychiatric diagnoses among patients with chronic cough, a 10 year analysis,” and finally, “Surgical management of idiopathic subglottic stenosis in pregnant patients.” It's a survey amongst North American expertise centers, and this would be in collaboration with some of our colleagues from around the country in the North American Airway Collaborative.

Another of my Voice Center colleagues, Dr. Rebecca Nelson, is senior author on a poster looking at immune checkpoint inhibitor induced supraglottitis - a case series. This will be presented by our PGY 2 resident, Dr. Sarah Benyo.

Next, Michelle Adessa, one of my speech pathology colleagues in the Voice Center, will be presenting on the clinical pathway of the normal outpatient modified barium swallow. This research is five years in the making and we're excited to share our results. She and our medical student team have worked very hard on extracting a large amount of data for this particular study.

Finally, I'm proud to have contributed with my Voice Center colleagues on the poster  “The Natural History of Recovery from Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis after Thyroid Surgery and the Impact of Intraoperative Nerve Monitoring.”

On Saturday at the American Bronco Esophageal Association, I'll be moderating a panel on issues of cancer survivorship. Specifically, we'll be looking at the laryngopharyngeal impact and opportunities within Head and Neck Cancer survivorship. This panel will include Dr. Nelson, and we're going to speak on a range of topics that affect some of our head and neck cancer survivors, including difficulty swallowing, velopharyngeal insufficiency, hoarseness, and other areas, and this should be an interactive panel with some other colleagues from around the country.

Additionally, I'll be a discussant for a session in the American Laryngology Association on the emerging use of AI and tech in laryngology.

Well, as we wrap up and head toward COSM in just a week or so, be sure to check out our social media channels throughout the week for insights from our staff, residents, fellows and medical students on their featured research, and visit ClevelandClinic.org/COSM2024 for a full list of our presentations and posters.
