Specialty Infectious Disease Clinics

Community Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (COPAT) Program

Members of the Department of Infectious Disease play an integral role in the managing of the OPAT program which has one of the highest volumes by a single center in the country and continues to grow. This multidisciplinary effort involves stakeholders from Cleveland Clinic's Homecare department, discharge coordinators, pharmacists and clinical nurses. Notably, a staff physician for the Department of Infectious Disease must see each patient who receives OPAT.

Endocarditis Clinic

Clinic staff are: Steven Gordon, M.D., Thomas Fraser, M.D, and Alice Kim, MD

Sampling of conditions treated in this clinic:

Bacterial inflammation of the endocardium (intracardiac area); major symptoms include fever, fatigue, heart murmurs, splenomegaly, embolic episodes and areas of infarction.

Infections due to cardiac devices, grafts, or implants.

Granuloma Clinic

Available on Tuesday mornings.

Sampling of conditions treated in this clinic: Histoplasmosis, coccidioidmycosis, cyptococcosis, Mycobacterial infections (including tuberculosis and mycobacterial infections other than tuberculosis such as mycobacterial avium-intracellulare complex (MAC).

HIV/AIDS Clinic

Community Outreach efforts by Kristin Englund, MD

Awarded funding through Ryan White Title Assistance to provide support services for patients living with HIV/AIDS who are uninsured and underinsured in Northeast Ohio. Our community outreach programs help disseminate the availability of access of Ryan White funding to patients at the Women’s Homeless Shelter, Cleveland Free Clinic, AGAPE, and other community-based efforts.

International Traveler’s Health Clinic

Full service travel clinic providing pre-travel health and safety advice to persons planning to travel abroad. All necessary vaccinations and prescription medications necessary to facilitate safe travel are administered or prescribed. We provide a comprehensive itinerary review, and develop individualized packets of information for each client. Post-travel evaluation is available when needed. Our clinic is listed with the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and the International Society of Travel Medicine.

Transplant Infectious Disease Clinic

Robin Avery, M.D., Section Head

Led by Dr. Robin Avery, the Transplant Infectious Disease Clinic is designed for patients who have infectious complications following bone marrow and solid organ transplantation , or who are being evaluated prior to transplantation. Physicians in the Transplant Infectious Disease Clinic evaluate patients prior to transplant to determine and help minimize their infectious risks; evaluate and treat post-transplant patients for infections or possible infections; assist the Cleveland Clinic’s transplant teams in developing prophylactic protocols to prevent infection; work with patients who are returning to work post-transplant to minimize their risk of occupational infection; and educate patients and families on infection-related issues post-transplant.

On a national level, Dr. Avery was one of three editors of the American Society of Transplantation’s (AST) 2004 Infectious Disease Guidelines, and has co-authored answers to commonly asked questions for the AST Web site.

Referrals

Transplant infectious disease specialists welcome consults from physicians in the community who are treating transplant patients and who want to discuss complex infectious disease issues.
