Overview
Cleveland Clinic's Department of Vascular Surgery performs more than 8,000 procedures annually for patients with a broad spectrum of vascular diseases at multiple locations throughout Northeast Ohio. Our physicians are national and international leaders in treating aneurysmal disease, peripheral and cerebrovascular disease. We utilize both open and the latest endovascular methods to achieve excellent outcomes. We also manage the full spectrum of creation and maintenance of dialysis access needs and have two dedicated centers to minimally invasive treatments for venous disease.
Acting in close cooperation with cardiac surgery, cardiology and vascular medicine, the Department of Vascular Surgery provides comprehensive services for all types of vascular disorders, including new technologies for aortic, peripheral and cerebrovascular diseases.
The Department of Vascular Surgery has extensive experience providing new options for patients turned down for care elsewhere. We perform a large number of re-operative surgeries and interventions for patients whose original operations have been performed elsewhere. The department serves as a major referral center for these and other difficult cases throughout Ohio, the United States and abroad.
The Department of Vascular Surgery conducts one of the largest post-graduate training programs in vascular surgery in the United States, and our academic work has been published in scientific journals throughout the world. Although the enormous volume of our activity is the hallmark of the department, we are proud that our reputation has been established one patient at a time.

Your Visit
Getting the Most out of Your Vascular Surgery Consultation at Cleveland Clinic
We want you to get the most out of your first visit with a vascular surgeon at Cleveland Clinic’s Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. We know your time is valuable, and we will try to keep your wait time as short as possible and be as efficient as we can during your appointment. You may need tests or a visit with another doctor to help us get a complete picture of your health, condition and the best plan of care for you.
Please bring a list of all questions and concerns you and your family have about your health, and your surgeon will talk to you about them during your visit.
Release of Medical Records
It is important that you send all medical records and images related to your vascular condition to your Cleveland Clinic surgeon before your appointment. This allows for a detailed review ahead of your appointment, and your surgeon can go over the information during your appointment. It also helps to shorten your appointment time and avoid repeat testing. If you cannot send your records or download your images, please bring them with you to your appointment.
A release form is available online, and your doctor or hospital can send the information we need to review.
It is best to bring the actual images (usually on a CD) from tests such as ultrasounds, CT scans and MRIs. Please make sure your doctor/hospital sends the actual images and not just the report.
Additional Testing
You may need to have tests done while you are at Cleveland Clinic. Most of the vascular tests are done in the surgical department. We will do everything possible to schedule all the tests you need on the same day as your appointment. It is possible that you may need preauthorization from your insurance company, which can delay testing until the tests are approved.
If you have problems with your heart and/or lungs, you may need pulmonary function and/or a cardiac stress test after your visit with the vascular surgeon. The results of these tests will help your surgeon decide if surgery is a good treatment option for you.
Deciding on the Best Treatment
We will spend a lot of time getting information about you and your condition to make the correct diagnosis and to determine the best plan of care for you. There are many factors involved when surgery is the best treatment option. Your surgeon will talk to you about surgical options, including the approach (open, endovascular or combined). The discussion will also include information about your hospital stay and recovery, which may involve physical therapy to regain your strength.
