Medical Students Elective Rotation Program

Application Process

Clinical electives are available to students in their final year of medical school. A completed application must be forwarded to the Department of Medical Student Education. Please indicate on the application the preferred rotations and dates available. Our rotations are four weeks in length. Applications for less than or more than 4 weeks will not be considered. Two separate rotations are permitted for a maximum of eight total weeks.

Students will be notified, in writing, of either acceptance or denial of their application. Students may check on the status of their application by calling the Student Education Office at 954/659-6211 or 1-866-293-7866 ext. 56211. Elective Requirements

The following is required in order to process your applications: Please make sure all supporting documents are sent to the Director of Medical Student Education, Department of Graduate/Medical/Medical Student Education, 2950 Cleveland Clinic Boulevard, Weston, Florida 33331.

Prerequisites

All prerequisites must be met before you are approved for a rotation. This includes the completion of all core rotations and status as a final year medical student when you are scheduled to participate in the rotation.

Certificate of Malpractice Insurance

Most medical schools will provide a certificate of insurance. If your school does not provide malpractice insurance for you on “away” electives, be sure to provide proof of insurance. You will not be approved without documentation that you have malpractice insurance coverage for your rotation.

Health Requirements

Please provide proof of immunizations, specifically Diphtheria/tetanus booster within 10 years, Hepatitis B vaccination or immune status, Tuberculin status with documentation and intradermal PPD completed no more than six months prior to starting date of rotation, chicken pox disease history or titer, and MMR for applicants born after 1957.

The Office of Medical Student Education requires medical students and graduate students to provide proof of the following immunizations:

  • Varicella rubella, titers, and/or proof of immunization MMR (mumps, measles, rubella)
  • Recent documented TST test or recent chest x-ray (< 1 year) if known TST positive
  • Proof of hepatitis B immunity (seriology)
  • Proof of bloodborne pathogen training or training will be provided prior to starting rotation
  • All visitors must provide this documentation in order to begin a scheduled rotation.
Health Insurance

Proof of health insurance must be provided before the student can start his/her rotation. The Cleveland Clinic does not provide health insurance to students.

Letter of Good Standing

Please have your school forward a letter of good academic standing and approval of the elective for credit. An evaluation of your performance on the rotation will be forwarded to your school upon completion of the elective.

Cancellation Policy

Once your assignment has been confirmed, either by phone and/or mail, you are expected to complete the rotation. While cancellation may be necessary, please do so at least 30 days in advance. Your school will be notified when you have canceled.

International Students

In addition to the above, additional requirements are as follows:

  • Medical School Accreditation
    Your medical school must be accredited in your home country.
  • USMLE Step 1
    You must provide proof of a passing score on this examination.
  • Language
    A demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English should be provided.
  • State Board of Independent Colleges and Universities
    In order for an international medical student to pursue an elective rotation here, the student’s medical school must contact the Florida State Board of Independent Colleges and Universities to obtain SBICU 700 and complete the form.

Housing

No housing is provided. Students are responsible for their own accommodations.

Meals

Students are responsible for all of their meals.

Parking

Parking is provided, at no charge, to students participating in a clinical rotation. Weston students must park in the Employee Parking Lot (north side of the facility). Students must register their car (make, model, year & license plate number) with Security/Facilities by completing a form on their first day at orientation and make a $10 deposit (exact change - cash only) which will be returned at the end of your rotation. Students must always display the temporary parking card on the dashboard of their car when parking at the Clinic.

Lab Coats

Be sure to bring your lab coats; it is required that you wear one while on the premises of Cleveland Clinic Florida.

Miscellaneous

Students are expected to bring their own diagnostic equipment and textbooks.
