Student Gets Back Freedom After Transplant

At age 15, Shari Mosley had kidney failure, as well as complications from fistulae. In high school, Shari would spend 3 hours after school in dialysis each day.

“Now that I have the transplant, I’ve been given back my freedom."

However in 2009, a kidney transplant at Cleveland Clinic brought an end to 7 years of a life scheduled around hospital visits and treatments.

“Now that I have the transplant, I’ve been given back my freedom,” Shari says.

Since 1963, over 3,500 kidney transplants have been performed at Cleveland Clinic.

"It's still surreal to me that I have a transplant. Being here, I met so many different people and very nice people [sic]," says Shari.

Shari believes that the best part is that she can finally do the things she loves to like travel and spend time with her friends.

Shari, now 23, just graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising and looks forward to completing a master’s degree in business administration.

Shari says, "I held down two jobs, going to school... I live my life. I know plenty of young people that have been on dialysis, and they don't do anything. I know it gets hard, but you don't stop your life because you start dialysis. Don't you want people to say that you're a fighter? [sic]"
