Biographical Sketch

Colleen Gorman Koch, M.D., M.S., received a B.A. in history from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI (Phi Beta Kappa; magna cum laude) and her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, OH. She received her Master of Science degree in clinical research design and statistical analysis from the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Following medical school, Dr. Koch completed an internship in internal medicine at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, followed by a residency in anesthesiology at The Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA. As a senior resident she specialized in cardiac, thoracic and vascular anesthesia. Dr. Koch served as a clinical instructor of anesthesiology at The Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, prior to joining Staff at the Cleveland Clinic Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology in 1992.
 
In addition, Dr. Koch completed advanced training as a clinical associate in echocardiography in the Department of Cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic. She is a recipient of Cleveland Clinic’s distinguished Bruce Hubbard Stewart Fellowship Award for her contributions in the area of patient care. Dr. Koch serves on the medical school admissions committee for the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. She is Vice Chair for Research and Education in the Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, serves on the Leadership Council for the Anesthesia Institute and has a joint appointment with Outcomes Research. In addition, Dr. Koch completed the Leading in Health Care course sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic’s Office of Practice Management.

Dr. Koch has been invited to lecture nationally on her research interests, as well as on specialty interests of transesophageal echocardiography, gender and transfusion-related issues in cardiac surgery. Her external professional activities include Vice Chair for the Scientific Program Committee for the national Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, Editorial Board for Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, and recent appointments to the Board of Trustees for the International Anesthesia Research Society and an appointment as an Associate CME Editor for Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology for Annals of Thoracic Surgery. In addition, Dr. Koch serves as an ad hoc reviewer for a number of biomedical journals. She has numerous original research publications in leading medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. In addition, she has authored several book chapters in her field of practice. Dr. Koch is principal investigator for 2 randomized controlled trials on red cell transfusion in cardiac surgery. Dr. Koch is board certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology and in Perioperative Echocardiography by the National Board of Echocardiography. She is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
