Biographical Sketch
Michael Licina, MD, is a Staff Anesthesiologist and Vice Chair of Operations in the Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, Anesthesiology Institute at Cleveland Clinic. He is board-certified in anesthesiology, perioperative transesophageal echocardiography and critical care medicine. Dr. Licina has a special interest in cardiothoracic anesthesiology, clinical research related to the assessment and treatment of ventricular dysfunction, intraoperative echocardiography, quality assessment and improvement, and resident education.
A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Licina attended the University of Pittsburgh, graduating summa cum laude with a degree in chemistry/biochemistry. Following his undergraduate work, he continued at the University of Pittsburgh for his medical degree, where he won the Charles Guthrie Award in Physiology. He took his internship in internal medicine and a residency in anesthesia at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, where he became Chief Resident.
This clinical training was followed by fellowships in cardiothoracic anesthesia from the Naval Hospital and from Emory University in Atlanta. Dr. Licina became a Staff Anesthesiologist at the Naval Hospital, and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the Uniformed Services of Health Sciences, as part of his military obligation. He served for 8 years of active duty in various roles.
This was followed by a fellowship in echocardiography from Cleveland Clinic. He was appointed to Cleveland Clinic in 1988 as a Staff Anesthesiologist in the Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia. Dr. Licina was an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Health Sciences Center at the Ohio State University. Dr. Licina has been active at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine as a PBL instructor since it was founded. He is Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Licina served in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and was honorably discharged from the Navy with the rank of Commander. He is a senior examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology and sat on the Intraoperative TEE Council of the American Society of Echocardiography.
His current clinical research is part of a pilot, multicenter randomized study to evaluate nesiritide infusion, post-induction anesthesia, to manage coronary artery bypass graft patients who require cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. Dr. Licina has been invited to present his clinical experiences and research to medical symposia and conferences nationally and internationally. He has published articles and abstracts related to his specialty interests in leading medical journals. He is author or co-author of several chapters in medical textbooks on cardiac anesthesia, prosthetic valve function, and intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography.
Dr. Licina is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the International Anesthesia Research Society, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesia, the American Society of Echocardiography, the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists and the Cleveland Society of Anesthesiologists.
Dr Licina has been very active in community service. He has been involved with the Greater Cleveland Council of the Boy Scouts of America for the last 11 years in a troop,district and council level.
