Biographical Sketch

Roy Greenberg, MD, is a Vascular Surgeon in the Departments of Vascular Surgery and Thoracic and Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Sydell and Arnold Miller Heart & Vascular Institute. He holds joint appointments in the Imaging Institute Department of Diagnostic Radiology and the Lerner Research Institute Department of Biomedical Engineering. He is also Director of Endovascular Research and the Cleveland Clinic Peripheral Vascular Core Laboratory.

Dr. Greenberg is board-certified in vascular and general surgery. His specialty interests primarily relate to the endovascular repair of complex aortic and peripheral arterial problems. He runs several trials in this region and has an active biomedical engineering and imaging research laboratory.

Dr. Greenberg received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine after completing his undergraduate degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. He completed his surgical internship and residency at The University of Rochester, where he became Chief Resident and Instructor in surgery. His clinical training continued at the University of Rochester with a fellowship in interventional radiology followed by a fellowship in vascular surgery , and trained in interventional radiology in Malmo, Sweden . Dr. Greenberg joined Cleveland Clinic in 1999. He was awarded the Master Clinician Award at the Cleveland Clinic in 2009.

He has authored or co-authored more than 200 articles in peer–reviewed medical journals and authored  over 50  medical textbook chapters and several books. He is on the editorial board of several  journals, including the Journal of Endovascular Therapy, Annals of Vascular Surgery and Cardiovascular Surgery. He serves as a reviewer for Circulation, Lancet, Journal of Vascular Surgery and Journal of the American College of Surgeons, among others. His vascular surgeries have been telecast live internationally and nationally to medical conferences and symposia, and he frequently is an invited lecturer at international and national medical conferences.

The focus of Dr. Greenberg’s research has been the development and assessment of endovascular devices for treating  aortic  diseases, and he holds more than 50 patents on devices developed from his research. He is especially interested in  the minimally invasive treatment of aortic aneurysms, aortic dissections  as well as heriditary connective tissue diseases. He has served as national principal investigator for the U.S. FDA Phase II Zenith Endograft Trial for abdominal aortic endografting and as principal or co-investigator on other clinical studies focused on endografting the aorta.

Dr. Greenberg is a Distinguished Fellow of the Society of Vascular Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology and a Fellow of the American Association for Thoracic Surgeons. He has been inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and is a member of the Peripheral Vascular Society, the Society of Interventional Radiology, the International Society of Endovascular Specialists, the Midwestern Vascular Surgical Society and the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.   He is an honorary member of many international vascular surgical societies.

Industry Relationships

Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists may collaborate with the pharmaceutical or medical device industries to help develop medical breakthroughs or provide medical expertise or education. Cleveland Clinic strives to make scientific advances that will benefit patient care and support outside relationships that promise public benefit. In order for the discoveries of Cleveland Clinic physicians' and scientists' laboratories and investigations to benefit the public, these discoveries must be commercialized in partnership with industry. As experts in their fields, Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists are often sought after by industry to consult, provide expertise and education.

To assure professional and commercial integrity in such matters, Cleveland Clinic maintains a program that reviews these collaborations and, when appropriate, puts measures in place to minimize bias that may result from ties to industry. The Cleveland Clinic publicly discloses the names of companies when (i) its physicians/scientists receive $5,000 or more per year (or, in rare cases, equity or stock options) for speaking and consulting, (ii) its physicians/scientists serve as a fiduciary, (iii) its physicians/scientists receive or have the right to receive royalties or (iv) its physicians/ scientists hold any equity interest for the physician's/scientist's role as inventor, discoverer, developer, founder or consultant.* In publicly disclosing this information, the Cleveland Clinic tries to provide information as accurately as possible about its physicians' and scientists' connections with industry.
