Cardiovascular Perfusionist

Perfusion technology is recognized as an allied health profession. The perfusionist is responsible for supporting or temporarily replacing a patient's circulatory and/or respiratory system, either partially or totally.

The heart-lung machine is a machine that removes carbon dioxide from the blood and replaces it with oxygen during heart surgery. This allows the surgeon to work on the heart without compromising other body organs. The perfusionist manages the heart-lung machine during surgery.
