Celebrate Sisterhood 2016: April 2 - A Conversation with Mahisha Dellinger, CEO & Founder of the CURLS Empire

Attendees of the Cleveland Clinic Celebrate Sisterhood program in Beachwood on April 2 benefitted from a personable, dynamic speaker, Ms. Mahisha Dellinger, CEO and Founder of Curls Empire. With much grit and determination, Ms. Dellinger was able to leave abject poverty and create a multimillion dollar hair care dynasty.

In an extemporaneous and charismatic manner, she shared excerpts from her book, “Against All Odds: From the Projects to the Penthouse” to a receptive audience. Participants learned about tools that can be used to embrace a wealth mindset and the essentials of entrepreneurship: get a life coach, find a mentor, be extraordinary, do your homework, know your weaknesses; the art of negotiation, build a support group, be confident, be resilient, write a business plan, network and, above all, just do it.

Typically, Celebrate Sisterhood topics embrace health issues for multicultural women. However, Linda Bradley, MD, founder and chair of Celebrate Sisterhood, chose this speaker and topic related to financial health literacy because wealth disparities frequently impact health choices among her patients. Celebrate Sisterhood continues to utilize robust community-based avenues for health information exchange and aligns with the goals of population health management.

Celebrate Sisterhood 2016: January 9 Dynamic Cooking Event

In collaboration with the Center for Functional Medicine, the Office of Government and Community Outreach and South Pointe Hospital, Celebrate Sisterhood presented an inaugural dynamic cooking class with Dr. Mark Hyman on Saturday, January 9, 2016. More than 200 participants were welcomed by white-aproned volunteers, energetic health and wellness food vendors, a healthy breakfast, free health screenings, massages, raffle prizes and gift bags.

Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Linda Bradley provided a scholarly and groundbreaking approach on how to live better, longer and with fewer chronic diseases---JUST COOK! Attendees learned numerous cooking techniques, savored new spices, and enjoyed five recipes that emphasized flavor, ease of preparation, and great taste. Select recipes from Dr. Hyman’s recent book 10-Day Detox Diet Cookbook were prepared, demonstrated and tasted during the cooking class.

The cooking fest was interspersed with sobering health statistics and articulated the importance of self-care. Attendees learned about which foods to routinely add to their diet, beneficial supplements, the importance of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and the necessity of exercising daily.

Celebrate Sisterhood 2015: October 17 Health & Wellness Summit

More than 800 people attended this year’s robust annual summit, "Celebrate Sisterhood (SM) Multicultural Health & Wellness Summit: Pathways to Discovering a Healthier You!" held at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven.

Sisterhood was palpable throughout the day. Comments from one attendee summarized it best when she wrote, “This program was riveting. I finally got the wake-up call for me to prioritize my health and realize that the easy choice and only choice is the healthy choice. Thank you for helping me understand the complexity of health problems that I might have if I don’t change. More importantly, thank you for teaching me how to take the first steps to change my behavior.”

The multifaceted speakers were animated and reflective, providing sobering healthcare statistics and the rationale to change. Throughout the day the speakers, Cleveland Clinic health screening teams, and even a group of Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine students extolled the vision that health should be the norm, not the exception. The ballroom buzzed as women talked about the economic and moral imperative to change and discussing ways to make their health a higher priority.

The Celebrate Sisterhood 2015 Summit had two powerful speakers and an engaging panel of gynecologic experts. Michael Roizen, MD, gave an exhilarating keynote address, “This Is Your Do-Over: 7 Secrets to Losing Weight, Living Longer, and Getting a Second Chance at the Life You Want.” It was sobering, entertaining and educational. Dr. Leslie Cho, Director of Cleveland Clinic’s Women’s Cardiovascular Center, and Section Head, Preventive Cardiology and Rehabilitation, spoke on “Charting Your Path to a Healthier Heart.” Finally, our panelists Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD, Dr. Margaret McKenzie and Dr. Linda Bradley, offered a rousing and comedic panel entitled “Everything You Ever Wanted to Ask Your Gynecologist, But Were Afraid to Ask.” The panel was moderated by Dr. Leonor Osorio.

The program included food tastings, makeovers and opportunities to schedule appointments at the Cleveland Clinic at the event. A myriad of lifestyle exhibits, including recipes and healthy cooking tips, were offered.
