Theresa L. Cary, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, CHFN, CCRN, is a board-certified adult clinical nurse specialist in medical cardiology step-down at Cleveland Clinic main campus. Cary is a consultant, clinical expert, educator and researcher for three units, with a professional interest in heart failure. One of her notable career successes includes the development of a unit-based nurse champion program designed to support staff nurses with patient care and education. Due to her success, this program has been used as a best practice throughout other inpatient units within the health system. Cary also developed an interdisciplinary heart failure patient education class that educated more than 2,000 patients and family members in its first two years.

Cary entered the professional practice of nursing in 1991 as a surgical floor staff nurse at Penrose-St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Throughout her tenured career, she has also worked in surgical intermediate care, cardiac step-down, coronary intensive care and heart failure intensive care. Cary joined Cleveland Clinic in 1997, and in 2005, obtained her professional critical-care certification and accepted a position as clinical instructor for the coronary and heart failure intensive care units. With a passion for clinical and professional education, she has established an effective process for physician/nurse patient rounds. Cary is a member of three national nursing industry associations.

Leadership

Focusing her work on the improvement of multidisciplinary relationships and the advancement of the nursing profession, Cary’s forward-thinking initiatives have proven successful. Through focused efforts and strong leadership, she has facilitated collaborative interaction between the heart failure intensive care unit, step-down unit and the outpatient heart failure department to coordinate transition for patients between care areas. Additionally, she established and chairs the Heart and Vascular Institute’s step-down nursing practice council.

Cary is a clinical nurse specialist with clinical expertise in medical cardiology step-down with additional expertise in surgical intermediate care, coronary and heart failure intensive care.

Teaching

Cary provides preparatory education at Cleveland Clinic for the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses’ critical care and progressive care certification examinations, as well as quarterly education for staff and advanced practice nurses in 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG) interpretation. While serving as a clinical instructor, she directed the orientation of new nurses and nursing assistants and provided continuing education for all nursing staff in the coronary intensive care and heart failure intensive care units.

Research, Publications & Presentations

A published author and experienced presenter, Cary’s career works encompass pieces on dietary sodium restriction for patients with heart failure, preventative cardiology, readmission prevention, medical management of aortic stenosis, and more. With international presentation experience, Cary was a podium speaker in Instanbul, Turkey, at an international U.S. State Department Nursing conference. She has also presented at national conferences for the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses, and more.
