The Zielony Nursing Institute thrives from a constant flow of nursing students. Every year since 2009, there have been over 7,000 nursing students partaking in clinicals at our hospitals. In fact, each day there are over 1,200 students engaged in best-practice learning across the entire Cleveland Clinic enterprise. Because of our close partnerships with some of the top schools in the nation, we are able to bring the best and the brightest to the Zielony Nursing Institute. We take pride in mentoring and developing new nurse professionals, and offering student nurse employment options, educational rotations and self-directed learning formats.
Our pilot program launched December 13, 2010. Although we are no longer accepting applications at this time please continue to check our website for future program details and application information.

Cleveland Clinic has been using electronic medical records (EMR) to enhance patient care through standardized and proficient documentation for many years. In 2010, the Zielony Nursing Institute expanded its online Student Nurse Portal (SNP) to provide a course that focuses on entry of data into an electronic documentation system.
Based on the data-to-wisdom continuum developed by author Ramona Nelson, RN, PhD, FAAN, students are able to visualize how simple data entered into the EMR becomes information and is then transformed into knowledge and wisdom, enhancing their practice and promoting critical thinking. Students also begin to understand how their documentation is incorporated into the EMR along with data from other disciplines to create a total picture of patient needs.
In keeping with the Zielony Nursing Institute's goals for professional development, access to the SNP was extended in 2010 to all healthcare personnel through the Center for Online Medical Education and Training, which supports Cleveland Clinic’s Web-based training. Personnel can easily access courses to broaden their understanding of the EMR. Further, personnel who access the courses gain a greater understanding of the continuum of data-to-wisdom that is essential to administer high-quality, safe patient care.
In 2010, the SNP also became an instructional tool on an international level. An account was created for our colleagues at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) in Abu Dhabi. Nurses began to access the portal as soon as it was made available and they continue to use it to expand their understanding of the EMR.
The Cleveland Clinic currently has over 900 Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) working in a variety of settings; from outpatient clinics to the hospital and critical care units and the Emergency Department. These advanced practice nurses include certified nurse practitioners (CNP), clinical nurse specialists (CNS), certified nurse midwives (CNM) and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA).
APN’s are a vital part of the health care team at the Cleveland Clinic, and we are committed to the nursing school programs in supporting the clinical component of the education.
The Cleveland Clinic plays an integral role in educating nurses at all levels. The Zielony Nursing Institute is committed to providing vital clinical experiences for advanced practice nursing students.
In keeping with the Zielony Nursing Institute's goals for professional development, we want to provide a great experience for the APN student, and the APN preceptor.
As an APN student please complete the form below to request an APN Clinical Preceptor. You will be contacted by the APN office after completion of form.
