Cosmetic Facial Surgery Procedures
Cornell: Please explain the procedure, approximate cost and recovery time for a facelift.
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: A facelift will take off about 10 years of aging from your face.
All the incisions are placed in areas that are not seen and the scars usually fade with time.
A facelift will improve the contour of your face and neck and give you a much younger look.
The recovery time is approximately 1 week.
Regarding the cost, you may discuss with the Financial Counselor for the Dermatology & Plastic Surgery Institute at 216.445.1331 or on the toll free number 1.800.223.2273 ext 51331.
raytennis: Please talk about the potential severity of facial surgery rejuvenation, recovery time and final outcome in terms of feeling, scars, and for a man, how it affects hair growth/shaving etc.
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: The facelift procedure does have the potential for a major positive impact on male facial rejuvenation. The actual amount of surgery will depend on the type of improvement that is desired.
For mild deformities, one could try non invasive procedure such as fillers (injections.) With moderate to severe skin laxity, surgery will be more beneficial. Operations to consider will be face lift, eyelids etc.
For injection there is really no downtime for recovery. For surgery, recovery time is usually 1 week. Surgery will not affect hair growth or shaving.
raytennis: Will a face lift to take away "droop' below chin.
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: This is easily done with face/neck lift. The procedure will re-define your neck shape to what you had when you were much younger.
raytennis: Does the face return to full normal feeling without any numb spots?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: With a facelift, there is usually numbness that may last a few weeks. With time all the sensory nerves will tend to regrow, and the numbness will slowly go away.
RTC: What is the recovery cycle for facelifts including above eye lifts?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: The recovery time for both of those procedures is about one week.
lashes: Is there an age recommendation for facelifts? I am 30 and was told that I should not have it done, as I am too young.
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: It is usually too early for age 30. However, there is nothing that prevent you from having it if you have a lot of skin laxity. It is a personal decision.
locket: I thought the results of blepharoplasty were permanent. I was considering having it done. However, an acquaintance had it done some years ago and says that it is now coming undone. How long should this last?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: The result is usually quite permanent. However, as you know, we do not stop aging after surgery. Hence, as we age, minimal skin laxity occurs after 10-20 years.
tlg43: I am a 66 year old male with a so called turkey neck. Would this be an outpatient procedure? Are there a lot of bandages involved? Do you have any other information such as length of procedure, etc?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: This is outpatient procedure. The procedure is about 2-3 hours. It depends if the face needs to be done or not. The scar is placed in an area that is not seen.
- An overnight stay in a nearby hotel is recommended in order to examine the patient in the morning if individual lives outside of the Cleveland area.
- There is a big bandage for one day only. It is usually removed the next day.
- There could be some bruising of 7-10 days.
- Most people go back to work the following week.
- Possible complications are infrequent and minimal.
Body Contouring Procedures
TerriJ: The scars for arm lifts look extensive to me. Are there any new procedures to minimize the scarring with that procedure?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: There are two types of arms lift. The best way to determine which approach is used is with an examination by the physician.
For severe skin redundancy, the incision is usually long as you said. However, the incision is placed in an area that is very difficult to see.
For mild and moderate skin redundancy, we could do the surgery with a small scar close to your arm pit. Liposuction is also added to deflate and tighten the rest of the arm.
kelli: What do you use for breast implants? What do you consider the best/safest and most aesthetic method?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: I use both silicone and saline implants.
For a thin woman, silicone implants appear much more natural and they have a better feel.
Both implants are considered quite safe. Saline implants slightly more but not by much.
There is different type of incisions. The one around the areola can be barely seen and it is quite nice. However, an incision in the lower breast crease, or arm pit may be considered.
willows: With silicone breast implants, how do you know if there is any leakage?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: It depends on the amount of leakage and type of silicone implants previously placed. If the breast starts to become painful, harden and somewhat the shape change; one should suspect a leakage. An MRI of the breast is the most accurate test to do
callander: If I have breast reduction surgery, will the final result be firmer, ‘perkier’ breasts? If that is what I wanted, would I also have to have a breast lift as well?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: A breast reduction will also lift your breasts and they will become perkier. So a breast reduction includes a breast lift.
Cornell: Would you explain the procedure, approximate cost and recovery time for a breast lift?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: As you know, with aging, breast feeding, weight gain/weight loss, the breasts become droopy (i.e. ptotic) and the nipple position moves down. A breast lift is very powerful operation that will give the breast shape when you were in your teens/early twenty.
- The nipple is repositioned to where is supposed to be.
- The scar is usually around areola which makes it less visible.
- Sometimes, the incision will extend the scar on the skin inferiorly if the nipple position is very low. The only way to determine which approach is the best is for an examination with the physician.
- Recovery time is also about one week.
assistance: Under what conditions would breast reduction surgery be covered by insurance?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: Insurance will usually cover a breast reduction procedure if there are symptoms due to large breasts such as: rashes back and neck pain etc. If the breast reduction is going to remove than 500 grams per side (which is roughly a decrease in two cup sizes), it is usually covered by insurance. You need to speak with the insurance carrier for approval prior to the procedure.
crash: Can you still breastfeed after a breast reduction or after having implants put in?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: Yes it is possible to breastfeed after breast reduction if it is well done, however you might to supplement with bottle. Regarding implants, there is no impact on breast feeding.
balloon_animals: Can you please discuss the differences between tumescent and ultrasonic liposuction? What are the pros and cons of each?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: Here are the differences.
Pros: Quicker to do, low complication rate
Cons: Minimal skin tightening
Pros: Able to remove more fat/hard tissue than tumescent
There is also a debate whether it tighten the skin. In my opinion, this is very slight.
Cons: Longer operation to do. More bruising is likely and there is a chance of a possible of skin burn (very small chance.)
JRP_988: Is there a difference between men and women having liposuction? In how it is done, aftercare, results?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: No difference.
clowns: I have very thin lips and want to do something to make them fuller. How do I know whether I should choose lip implants or some kind of injection? Which is more natural looking?
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: I strongly advise for injection.
Cornell: Please explain the procedure, approximate cost and recovery time for a tummy tuck.
Speaker_-_Gaby_Doumit_MD: This is an operation that will remove excess skin from your stomach and decrease the size of your waist by few inches. The incision is usually placed beneath bikini line. Hence, it will not be very visible.
The recovery time is also about one week, but you cannot do any heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks.
