Cataract Evaluations & Surgery

In the early stages of cataract development, vision may be improved simply by a change in glasses prescription. In time, as the cataract increases, blurred vision and other symptoms will not be relieved by glasses; therefore, surgery will become necessary to restore useful vision.

Child/Infant SEE Examinations

The InfantSEE assessment offers early detection of potential eye and vision problems in addition to the eye screening conducted in a regular eye care visit.

Contact Lenses

A contact lens is a thin plastic or glass lens that is fitted over the cornea of the eye to correct vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism.

Corneal Disease & Transplantation

The cornea is the clear watch crystal-like dome covering the front of the eye. If the cornea becomes cloudy or serverly misshapen, it can be replaced with normal donor tissue in a procedure known as corneal transplantation.

Diabetic Eye Exam

An eye doctor (ophthalmologist) can detect diabetic retinopathy after conducting a thorough eye exam. The exam will likely include pupil dilation so that the doctor can look for any changes in blood vessels, new blood vessel growth, swelling of the retina, and retinal detachment.

Some eye conditions, like diabetic retinopathy, can be treated so that vision is restored or maintained. But, unfortunately, some eye conditions cannot be treated, resulting in low vision or blindness. While an obvious challenge of vision loss is restoring mobility and function, there is also the emotional toll of vision loss to consider.

Routine Eye Exams

Lakeland Eye physicians can detect many different eye diseases after conducting a thorough eye exam. These exams can help address potential vision issues before they become a problem.

Full Eye Glass Services

Eyeglasses correct vision problems, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia by focusing light more appropriately on the retina. Several Lakeland Eye locations also serve as optical dispensaries, offering a wide selection of high-end retail eyewear. Learn more about our retail eyewear locations.

Glaucoma Examinations & Treatment

The goal of glaucoma treatment is to prevent further vision loss by controlling pressure in the eye – similar to controlling blood pressure to prevent a stroke. Glaucoma can be treated successfully in several ways:

  • Medications, in the form of eye drops or pills, lower pressure by reducing the amount of fluid produced in the eye and increasing drainage. One or more medicines may be used at the same time.
  • Laser therapy, performed on an outpatient basis, is used to reduce pressure in the eye. A procedure called laser trabeculoplasty improves fluid drainage in patients with open-angle glaucoma. People with closed-angle glaucoma usually must be treated with a procedure called laser iridotomy, which creates a tiny opening in the iris (colored part of the eye), allowing the drainage angle to open.
  • Surgery may be needed to create a second drainage channel in the eye to supplement the natural one. This generally is performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia, and may allow the patient to reduce or eliminate glaucoma medications.

For more advanced cases, an artificial glaucoma drainage implant may help to decrease pressure. The implant helps to drain excess fluid, which is then absorbed into the body.

Laser Vision Correction Surgery

Lakeland Eye physicians perform the latest in Laser Vision Correction Surgery, including Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), Laser-Assisted Subepithelial Keratectomy LASEK, and Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)

Macular Degeneration Evaluations & Treatment

Macular degeneration is an eye disease that occurs when the small central portion of the retina, known as the macula, is damaged. The retina is the light-sensing nerve tissue at the back of the eye. Because the disease develops as a person ages, it is often referred to as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Oculoplastic Surgery

An oculoplastic surgeon is an ophthalmologist with advanced training in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids, orbit and lacrimal system to maintain the protection of the eye.

Retina & Vitreous Surgery

Retinal detachment is a very serious condition that occurs when the retina pulls away from its supporting tissues. Since the retina can't work properly under these conditions, permanent vision loss might occur if a detachment is not repaired within 24 - 72 hours.

Uveitis, Inflammatory & Infectious Disease

Because uveitis is serious, treatment needs to begin right away. For noninfectious uveitis, your ophthalmologist may prescribe eye drops containing steroids to reduce swelling and a dilating drop to relieve pain. Antibiotics are used in patients with infectious uveitis. Dark glasses will help with light sensitivity. For severe cases, other medications may be prescribed.
