The Department of Surgery at Cleveland Clinic in Florida has established since July 1999 a Section of Minimally Invasive Surgery.
Minimally Invasive Surgery, also known as Laparoscopic or Endoscopic Surgery, utilizes the advantages of cameras and scopes to perform the most advanced and delicates procedures through small incisions. These techniques can be applied to the neck, chest and abdomen.
This technique has a dramatic impact in the postoperative course. Patients experience less pain, earlier discharge home and resumption of normal activities. In addition it minimizes complications as hernias and infections by avoiding large incisions. Another obvious advantage is a better cosmetic result.
There is scientific evidence that most of the surgical procedures performed with this minimally invasive technique have results superior to the ones done with open techniques. However patients undergoing these procedures should be aware that surgeons still utilize the open or conventional surgical techniques as a valid option when endoscopy is not feasible or dangerous.
Since 1989, a large number of laparoscopic surgical procedures have been mastered utilizing the laparoscopic technique.
