Cleveland Clinic Florida Awarded Prestigious Leed Green Building Certification

November 24, 2009

Cleveland Clinic Florida announced today that it has been awarded LEED C1 Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

Cleveland Clinic Florida, located in Weston, achieved LEED C1 Silver Certification for its fourth floor renovation. The project was a complete transformation of office space into clinical and exam areas, making it the first LEED-certified healthcare space in Broward County. The fourth floor renovation created space for a new Women’s Health Center, Men’s Health Center, International Services Center and the Huizenga Executive Health Program.

LEED Certification of the fourth floor renovation was based on a number of green design and construction features which include the following: An energy-efficient heating ventilation and air conditioning system that releases no ozone depleting emissions; lighting that uses daylight sensor switches with continuous dimming to ensure consistent, healthy light levels; waterless urinals and high efficiency fixtures which allow Cleveland Clinic Florida to reduce water usage by 41 percent and save more than 81,000 gallons of potable water per year. In addition, products and materials used for the renovation, including furniture, are manufactured with over 20 percent recycled content by LEED standards. Throughout the project, no-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) products for all paints, adhesives, coatings, sealants, carpets and composite woods and laminates were used to provide a healthier breathing environment for patients and employees. And, 100 percent of the eligible appliances installed are Energy Star-Certified, reducing both energy consumption and utility bills.

“We believe in doing our part for the community and the world,” said Bernie Fernandez, MD, chief executive officer of Cleveland Clinic Florida. “We understand the value of using energy efficient products that are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Reducing emissions contributes to a healthier environment for our patients, employees, residents, businesses and the larger community.”

Cleveland Clinic Florida is in close proximity to multiple bus lines that connect the hospital to Broward County, parts of Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. As part of the project, bike racks were added to the hospital’s campus. Employees and visitors use the racks daily to help reduce automobile traffic.

“Cleveland Clinic Florida’s LEED Certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before and Cleveland Clinic Florida serves as a prime example of just how much we can accomplish.”
