Cleveland Clinic Florida was named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals® by Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare. The award recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, financial performance, and operational efficiency.
Cleveland Clinic Florida is the only teaching hospital in Florida recognized this year. It is the second time the Weston-based hospital has been named a top 100 hospital. For the past three years, Thomson Reuters has also named Cleveland Clinic Florida one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® in cardiovascular care.
“Cleveland Clinic’s commitment to providing patients with the highest quality evidence-based care is demonstrated by the outcomes we deliver every day,” said Bernie Fernandez, MD, chief executive officer of Cleveland Clinic Florida. “Our model of medicine, which integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education, fosters cooperation and collaboration among physicians and delivers outstanding patient care.”
Others have recognized Cleveland Clinic Florida for delivering quality, cost-effective care. The academic medical center is one of 75 U.S. hospitals to receive the Best in Value™: Superior Quality Merit Award from the 2009-2010 Hospital Value Index™. The index was developed from an independent analysis of more than 4,500 hospitals and focuses on performance in the categories of quality, affordability and efficiency, and patient satisfaction. In addition, the Department of Gynecology at Cleveland Clinic Florida was ranked by U.S. News's 2009-10 publication of America’s Best Hospitals.
The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks study evaluated 2,926 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in 10 areas: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, expenses, profitability, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia. The winning hospitals were announced in the March 29 edition of Modern Healthcare magazine.
“The 100 Top Hospitals winners raised the bar again this year, delivering a higher level of reliable care and greater value for their communities,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals programs at Thomson Reuters.
According to Thomson Reuters, if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in these 100 Top Hospitals award winners:
- More than 98,000 additional patients would survive each year.
- Nearly 197,000 patient complications would be avoided annually.
- Expenses would decline by an aggregate $5.5 billion a year.
- The average patient stay would decrease by nearly half a day.
