Cleveland Clinic, is a non-profit, physician-led, academic medical center that strives to provide compassionate healthcare of the highest quality in a setting of education and research. Cleveland Clinic was founded in 1921 by four renowned physicians with a vision of providing outstanding patient care based upon the principles of cooperation, compassion and innovation. Today, Cleveland Clinic is one of the largest and most respected health systems in the country. In 2012, Cleveland Clinic had over 5.1 million patient visits, 157,470 admissions, 200,800 surgical cases, employed 3,000+ physicians and scientists, and had over 1,785 residents and fellows in training. Worldwide, Cleveland Clinic has over 43,000 employees.
Group Practice and Institute Model
Cleveland Clinic is one of a few truly integrated delivery systems in the country. Structured as a group practice, the staff physicians at the main campus are salaried employees and are not in private practice. They pool their wisdom and expertise for the benefit of the patient and the community. While the employed staff is the foundation of Cleveland Clinic’s physician model the community hospitals also feature private practitioners that are affiliated with the organization through particular quality and operational standards.
Beginning in 2007, Cleveland Clinic reorganized into clinical institutes centered around organ systems to better compliment the group practice model. These institutes foster an environment that: maximizes coordination, improves patient access to multiple disciplines, allows experts to act as a dynamic team, and results in optimal treatment for patients. An Administrator and Physician Chairman work in collaboration to lead the strategic initiatives and day-to-day operations of each Institute and Department.
“Patients First”
“Patients First” is the guiding principle of Cleveland Clinic. It declares the primacy of patient care, comfort and communication in every activity we undertake. It affirms the importance of research and education for the improvement of patient care. “Patients First” also demands a relentless focus on measurable quality. By setting standards, collecting data and analyzing results, Cleveland Clinic puts patients first though improved outcomes and better service, providing a healthier future for all.
