Ongoing Trials and Research Information

Research and Innovations

The physicians and scientist in the Endocrine and Metabolism Institute are committed to doing research that advances the treatment of diseases and improves the care of patients. These studies include investigations of new treatments for diabetes and other endocrine disorders, newer surgical approaches to parathyroid and thyroid conditions radiofrequency ablation of liver tumors, and surgical and medical management of obesity.

Protege Study
  • Looking for men and women between the age of 8 and 36
  • Must be newly-diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes
  • Individuals must be within 12 weeks of diagnosis to qualify
  • Involves receiving a 14-day infusion of medication to help slow the progression of Type 1 diabetes
Type 2 Diabetes
  • A research study to test an investigational medication
  • Looking for men and women age 25 and over with Type 2 diabetes
  • Individuals who have developed kidney disease as a result of diabetes may qualify
Stampede
  • Randomized trial comparing medical treatment with surgery
  • Individuals with Type II diabetes between 20 and 60 may qualify
  • Must have HbA1c greater than 7.5%
  • Must have mild to moderate obesity (~30-70 pounds overweight)
Apidra
  • Involves taking Lantus/Apidra for blood sugar control
  • Individuals with Type II diabetes between ages of 30 and 80 may qualify
  • Must have a HbA1c greater than 7.5%
  • Cannot be on Avandia
  • Medications must be at a stable dose for 3 months prior to entering the study
Short Term Insulin Therapy
  • Randomized study using insulin on 2 different schedules
  • For African American Adults between ages of 40 and 70 years may qualify
  • Must have Type II diabetes with HbA1c greater than or equal to 8.5% 
Hypo CCS
  • Observational study of human growth deficiency
  • Adults with a diagnosis of a pituitary disorder may qualify
  • Must not have a diagnosis of cancer
Corlux
  • To test the safety and the ability of an oral drug to treat Cushing’s disease 
  • Adults diagnosed with Cushing’s disease who need medical treatment
  • Must not be a candidate for surgical treatment of Cushing’s
  • Patients who have taken high doses of steroids may not qualify
KIMS
  • Adult patients with GHD due to pituitary disease
  • Patients currently receiving GH replacement therapy with Genotropin
  • Maximum GH value of <5ug/L
Vitamin D
  • Randomized trial of Vitamin D supplementation
  • Must have well controlled Type II diabetes
  • Must be vitamin D deficient
