Cleveland Clinic’s Fellowship Training Program in the Endocrinology & Metabolism Institute is designed to provide you with:

Available Fellowship Programs

Endocrinology»

Under the leadership of Amir Hamrahian, MD, this program exposes fellows to a broad spectrum of disorders of the thyroid, lipid and bone metabolism, reproductive and neuroendocrinology, diabetes mellitus, and obesity. In order to comply with the requirements for sub-specialty board certification in endocrinology, metabolism, and diabetes by the American Board of Internal Medicine, applicants must successfully complete three years of residency training in Internal Medicine before applying. Fellows will gain clinical experience by participating in the inpatient consult service, as well as, the out-patient clinics for endocrinology, thyroid, pituitary, endocrine surgery, pediatric endocrinology, bone, lipid and clinical genetics. The program includes weekly two-hour endocrine grand rounds, a Diabetes Day Course, an American Association of Clinical Endocrinology Endocrine Review Course, and a course in Thyroid Ultrasound and Pituitary Diseases.

Fellows will meet individually with each member of the division to discuss research opportunities available. The research experience is typically generated from questions pertaining to endocrinology relating to the patient population.

Endocrine Surgery»

The Department of General Surgery offers an endocrine surgery fellowship of one year in length under the leadership of Allan Siperstein, MD, Surgery Institute Chairman. Applicants must have completed a general surgery residency and be board eligible or board certified in general surgery as determined by the American Board of Surgery. The fellow, in conjunction with the general surgery residents, will be primarily responsible for the care of all endocrine surgery patients on the service. This will include initial evaluation of patients, preparation for proposed procedure, conducting the procedure in a supervised fashion, and following the patient afterward.

As mastery is demonstrated, the fellow will help teach these procedures to the resident staff. It is anticipated that the fellow will participate in over 200 cases. There is a special emphasis on complex thyroid cancers, reoperative parathyroid surgery, familial endocrine syndromes, laparoscopic adrenal and pancreatic surgery and thermal ablation of hepatic metastases from endocrine tumors. This unique position will afford a fellow a large surgical experience of complex cases providing an excellent opportunity for a final career in endocrine surgery.

In addition to clinical responsibilities the fellow will also support research initiatives covering both clinical trials and basic science work including the development of novel endocrine techniques in the animal laboratory. Participation will include involvement in ongoing studies as well as establishing original research protocols. The fellow will present the results of these studies at national meetings and submit manuscripts to peer reviewed journals. This fellowship is offered through the American Association of Endocrine Surgery match process. What is ERAS®?

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) developed ERAS - The Electronic Residency Application Service, to transmit residency applications, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and other supporting credentials from applicants and ERAS Fellowships Document Office (EFDO) to fellowship program directors using the Internet.

How does ERAS Fellowships work?

The ERAS solution is made up of three components:

  1. The applicant website MyERAS
  2. The Dean’s Office Workstation (DWS) used by EFDO
  3. The Program Director’s Workstation (PDWS)
  • Using a web browser, applicants complete an application, select programs, and create and assign supporting documents using a secure site.
  • Applicants submit these files to ERAS for processing.
  • The ERAS Fellowships Document Office (EFDO) staff uses the DWS to scan and store the applicant’s medical school transcripts, letters of recommendation, and photograph to transmit these files to the ERAS Post Office.
  • Cleveland Clinic will connect to the ERAS Post Office and download applications using the Program Director’s Workstation (PDWS).

ERAS processing fees are based on the number of programs an applicant selects, and can be found on the ERAS website.

How does an applicant that has already graduated from medical school use ERAS to apply to a Cleveland Clinic program?

Applicants in this situation would apply through the ERAS Fellowships Document Office (EFDO), since they will be transmitting supporting documents to your chosen programs. Applicants will need to instruct the individuals writing their letters of recommendation to send them to the EFDO. Contact the EFDO for more information.

When can an applicant get started?

ERAS instructions and your electronic token or accesskey to MyERAS website will be distributed by the EFDO beginning in June 2013.

What will the EFDO do?

The EFDO establishes the processing procedures for ERAS fellowships and the schedule for distributing MyERAS information. EFDO will also process supporting application documents, which includes scanning transcripts, attaching documents, processing letters of recommendation, sending files to selected programs via the ERAS Post Office, etc.

What is the deadline to apply to Cleveland Clinic programs?

Clinical Facilities

Cleveland Clinic has over 1700 physicians and scientists and 800 residents and fellows. Strong and supportive departmental leadership comes from Institute Chairman, Dr. James Young. Clinical teaching activities utilize one core teaching hospital.

Cleveland Clinic is a 1008-bed, Magnet Status, tertiary care hospital that serves as the major teaching hospital.

Research Facilities

There is a seven-bed, NIH-supported, Adult General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) located in Cleveland Clinic. Additionally, outpatient beds are available for GCRC studies. Many inpatient clinical research studies are performed by Division members on the GCRC.

Fellow’s Office

Within the Department of Endocrinology, an office has been architecturally designed to be used by the endocrinology fellows. This space is equipped with desks and computer facilities, and is adjacent to the Endocrine Clinic.

Endocrine Training Faculty

Fellows will have first-hand participation in clinical research under the direct supervision of faculty mentors and the Program Director. The endocrinology training faculty provides a diverse menu of research opportunities.

The fellows will design, plan and execute studies under the guidance of the faculty mentors. Each fellow’s program will be tailored to his or her specific goals.

Weekly Endocrine Grand Rounds

The Friday Endocrine Grand Rounds is attended by faculty fellows, house staff, and students. The topics discussed at this conference are clinically relevant, but may include newer developments in the basic sciences which are of increasing importance to a clinician.

The clinical fellows have an opportunity to present interesting cases they have seen and discuss a related area of diagnosis or therapy. Research protocols and results are discussed as well.

Journal Club

Journal Club follows Endocrine Grand Rounds every Friday. Each week fellows gather to discuss a group of recent articles they believe are of relevance. Often, this conference allows the opportunity to compare the content of the literature with "what we really do."

The focus is very clinical and the goal is to stay up-to-date on a broad range of topics. Fellows often cover articles in depth. A core curriculum lecture is given following Grand Rounds by a faculty member.

Research Seminar

The Friday morning Research Conference covers new research by fellows at Cleveland Clinic. Members of the Division and visiting scientists present both work that is in progress and new developments. The emphasis is on high-quality, cutting-edge science.

Fellows are also expected to participate in a monthly thyroid conference, an obesity journal club every other month, an Endocrine Board Review Course at Cleveland Clinic and Diabetes Day. All fellows present at National Endocrine Conferences.

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinology/Cleveland Clinic Endocrinology Board Review Course is directed to practicing endocrinologists and other physicians with an interest in endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes.

The goal of this course is to provide the participants an intensive preparation for the endocrinology and metabolism board examination.

Topics covered include:

  • Endocrinology, including diabetes control and complications
  • Nuclear Imaging
  • Thyroid Disorders
  • Endocrine Pathology
  • Hypo- and Hyperadrenalism
  • Endocrine Hypertension
  • Osteoporosis

The faculty is known for their clinical and teaching experience. In addition:

  • The lecture format will be heavily weighted to board simulation.
  • An interactive Audience Response System is employed to facilitate audience participation.
  • A comprehensive syllabus will be provided.
Diabetes Day

A course designed to summarize and present the latest knowledge in the management of diabetes to busy practitioners. Specific areas covered include:

  • combination therapy
  • treatment in hospital setting
  • management and prevention of complications
  • peculiarities in minority ethnic groups and adolescents
  • newer as well as future management options

Information

  • Rotations are four weeks long. Two weeks will be in-patient on the Endocrinology or Diabetes Service. Two weeks will be out-patient, where residents will be exposed to a wide range of endocrine disorders.
  • A two-hour Endocrine Grand Rounds is held weekly. There are daily Internal Medicine Lectures at noon. General Internal Medicine Grand Rounds once a week. Two Endocrine Core Lectures per week are given to the internal medicine residents.
  • Clinical research project opportunities or case reports may be available. Residents often present interesting cases at Endocrine Grand Rounds.
