Polaris Career Center Emergency Medical Technician Program In Partnership with Cleveland Clinic Health Systems Western Region EMS Academy

Polaris Career Center, a premier educational center dedicated to quality programs and services for students, is honored to be partnering with Cleveland Clinic Health System in offering a new Emergency Medical Technician program. During the past year, Deborah Headman, Polaris Career Center Associate Principal, has been working with Daniel Zezena, EMS Academy Director; Tod Baker, Initial Training Coordinator; and Dave Yarmesch, Continuing Education Coordinator to develop a new Emergency Medical Technician program to be offered to high school students. The dream of creating the highest quality of Emergency Medical Technician education has become a reality for students attending Berea, Brooklyn, Fairview Park, Midpark, North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, and Strongsville High Schools.

The new EMT program will utilize knowledgeable and experienced instructional staff from a variety of pre-hospital environments. The instructor pool will include individuals with more than 50 years of experience who are active in rural, urban, and critical care environments. Both the new, state-of-the-art EMS Academy facility and the new, state-of-the-art Health & Public Safety Center at Polaris Career Center will comprise the learning environments for students as they acquire skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their chosen career. Students will attend classes two days a week at West Park Center, a Cleveland Clinic Western Region facility located 1.5 miles east of Fairview Hospital, and three days at Polaris Career Center. Clinical internship will be arranged through Cleveland Clinic Health System Western Region.

Students eligible for this program are senior students interested in public safety or health careers. This senior-only program offers students who were unable to enroll in a two-year health or public safety program a one-year option. This program is designated as Tech Prep, requiring students to have demonstrated success in higher-level math classes, and can provide articulated credit to high school students who choose to enroll in post-secondary education programs beyond graduation.

Students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technology Program will learn basic anatomy, medical terminology, vital signs, patient assessment, medical math, and medical report writing. Students will also qualify to sit for the National Registry EMT-Basic Exam and may earn their CPR and EMS 911 Communication Certifications. This initial Polaris Career Center program, combined with the various post-secondary education options including Cleveland Clinic Health System Western Region EMS Academy’s Paramedic and Certified Intensive Care Paramedic (CICP) program, will create Northeast Ohio's most comprehensive educational model to date.
