Meet Dr. Feza H. Remzi

Dr Remzi

Feza H. Remzi, MD, an internationally renowned colorectal surgeon, has been appointed as Chairman of Colorectal Surgery in the Cleveland Clinic’s Digestive Disease Institute, which is ranked as #2 in the nation by U.S.News & World Report.

Dr. Remzi is a leader in the surgical treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. As Chairman, he will lead a team that performs the highest volumes of J-pouch surgeries in the world for ulcerative colitis, and collaborates very closely with our Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology to manage these patients post-operatively. He plans to carry on his department’s legacy of providing the highest quality care for the most complex patient populations and is dedicated to improving access and building life-long partnerships with referring physicians.   

First joining Cleveland Clinic in 1997, Dr. Remzi also serves as Ed and Joey Story Chair in Colorectal Surgery and the Director of the Center for International Medical Education. He received his medical degree from Hacettepe University School of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey. He completed his residency and fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, where he was mentored by Victor W. Fazio, MD, Chairman of the Digestive Disease Institute.

Dr. Remzi specializes in surgical treatment for mucosal ulcerative colitis, pelvic pouch procedures for mucosal ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis, sphincter-sparing operations, surgery for colon and rectal cancer, and complex reoperative abdominopelvic surgery.

In December 2007, Dr. Remzi performed the first single-port laparoscopic (SPL) colon resection entirely through a single incision in the navel. He leads the nation in research publications for the surgical management of ulcerative colitis, having authored more than 120 scientific papers. He has served as the primary investigator or co-investigator for 70 clinical trials and manages one of the largest databases of patients undergoing pouch surgery.
