Tanya Edwards, MD, MEd

Medical Director, Center for Integrative Medicine Clinical Practice

Dr. Edwards is staff at Cleveland Clinic in the Center for Integrative Medicine and associate professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Her clinical research interests are in diet and nutrition for maintaining health and treating specific conditions.

She received her medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1987 and completed residency training in Family Medicine at the University of Cincinnati in 1990. She completed the Harvard Macy Physician as Teacher fellowship at the Harvard Medical School of Education in 1998, and received her MEd in Medical Education at CWRU/John Carroll University in 2003.

She has served as Residency Faculty at the University of Cincinnati Family Medicine Residency program from 1990-1994, at Henry Ford Hospital Family Medicine Residency program from 1994-1996, and at University Hospitals of Cleveland at Case Western Reserve University from 1996 until coming to the Cleveland Clinic in 2004. She developed an extensive curriculum in Integrative medicine for the Medical Students at CWRU and the Residents in Family Medicine.

Dr. Edwards provides one-hour Integrative Medicine consultations that address all areas of the patient’s body, mind and spiritual health and well being at Cleveland Clinic’s Lyndhurst Campus. She then makes recommendations to improve the patient’s self-care through better diet and nutrition, exercise, vitamins and supplements, as well as other integrative medicine modalities when necessary.

Brenda Powell, MD

Dr Brenda Powell is staff at Cleveland Clinic in the Center for Integrative Medicine and associate clinical staff at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She received her medical degree from Duke University School of medicine in 1988 and completed residency training in family medicine at Duke University Medical Center in 1991. She completed the Harvard Macy Physician as teacher fellowship at the Harvard School of Education in 1999. She certified in travel medicine through the International Society of travel Medicine in 2007.

She began her career in private practice in family medicine in California. She was with Family Medicine at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine from 1995-2000. During this time she developed curriculum for women’s health training and the women’s health fellowship, taught electives in the medical school on travel medicine and served as predoctoral director in family medicine. Dr Powell has been with the Cleveland Clinic since 2000 in family medicine and travel medicine.

Dr. Powell devotes her practice to integrative medicine at the Center for Integrative Medicine in the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute. She’s currently seeing patients at Cleveland Clinic’s Lyndhurst Campus. Dr. Powell now sees patients at the Main Campus on Wednesdays.

In addition to seeing integrative medicine patients, Dr. Powell provides consultations in the Travel Clinic at the Beachwood Family Health Center.

Jamie Starkey, L.A.c

Lead Acupuncturist, Center for Integrative Medicine

Jamie earned a Bachelors degree in Biology, University of Toledo, and a Masters level degree in Acupuncture, American Institute of Alternative Medicine. She further enhanced her clinical training by completing a Clinical Internship at Guang AnMen Hospital in Beijing China, Acupuncture and Moxibustion Outpatient Department, an affiliate of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She is a Diplomate of Acupuncture, National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), and holds her acupuncture license from the Ohio State Medical Board. Additionally, she is a Level II Reiki Practitioner. Jamie has served as the Secretary of Ohio Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (OAAOM) 12/06-12/08 and a member Ohio Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (OAAOM) 12/05-Present.

Jamie offers Acupuncture here at the Cleveland Clinic with a focus on women’s health, oncology, acute/chronic pain management, stress-related disorders and acupuncture clinical research. “I take great pride in being a clinician of Traditional Chinese Medicine. I strive to help patients discover the ability their body has to heal itself when properly supported and brought back into a balanced state of health and wellness.”

Frank Caruso L.A.c.

Frank has earned a Masters Degree in Chinese Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, California. He is Nationally Certified in Acupuncture, Licensed by the Ohio Medical Board and a Member of the American Acupuncture Council, the Ohio Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He has studied in China on several occasions receiving training certificates from the teaching hospitals of ChengDu and NanJing Universities.

He has practiced Acupuncture with the Center for Integrative Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic since 2006. His interests are in pain management, migraine headaches, sports injuries, stress related disorders, and general wellbeing.

Frank believes a multi-disciplinary approach to health care is very important and encourages open dialogue between doctors and patients on choosing and utilizing the many types of tested, therapeutic options available.

Ed Dea, M.A.c., L.A.c., L.M.T.

Ed has been a practitioner of the Eastern Healing Arts for more than 25 years. He attended the New England School of Acupuncture (NESA) in Boston, MA., and the Traditional Acupuncture Institute (TAI) in Laurel, MD, graduating from TAI with a Masters Degree in Acupuncture. He is licensed by the State of Ohio Medical Board and certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

Ed offers exceptional personalized care through an integrated and wholistic approach to health and healing. He practices traditional Chinese and Japanese styles of acupuncture to address both acute and chronic conditions. Treatments are tailored to honor the uniqueness of each individual, while empowering you to better care for yourself in the process.

Susan Deng, L.A.c.

Susan Deng recently joined Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Integrative Medicine, bringing more than 16 years of experience using acupuncture to manage a full range of medical conditions, including: musculoskeletal disorders, nervous system disorders, fibromyalgia, pain, anxiety, depression, sciatica, arthritis, diabetes, chronic low back pain, heart disease, weight loss, smoking cessation, migraine headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome, insomnia, and more.

Ms. Deng practiced medicine in China before coming to the United States. She is a graduate of the Sun Yi San University of Medical Science, in Guanzhou, China, where she majored in General Medicine. After graduation, Susan spent eight years as a physician at the Guangdong Rehabilitation Hospital in Canton, China. She continued her education earning her Diploma in Acupuncture and Herbology from the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, in Canton, China.

After Ms. Deng came to the United States, she earned a Diplomate of Acupuncture, National Certification Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), and she was awarded her Acupuncture License from the Ohio State Medical Board. Ms. Deng is a lifetime member of the Ohio Association of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (OAAOM).

Ann Driscoll, L.A.c

Ann holds a Bachelor’s of English degree from Kent State University and a Master’s of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine degree from The New England School of Acupuncture. She comes to the field of acupuncture after studying Tai Chi Chuan in Boston, Massachusetts and then teaching English at the Beijing University of Science and Technology for two years.

Ann is licensed by the State of Ohio Medical board and certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) and has been in practice for ten years.

Because acupuncture is a holistic, energetic treatment, it lends itself to varied applications from pain management to internal conditions. Her special areas of treatment interest include women’s health and infertility, oncology support and neurological conditions.

Joie Hill, M.A.c, L.A.c

Joie began her career in the healing arts as an acupressure massage therapist over 10 years ago. She forged a path as an acupuncturist by completing her M.Ac. from Traditional Acupuncture Institute (TAI) in Maryland. Prior to joining the Center in 2009, she practiced acupuncture at the Baltimore Women’s Prison, primarily as a NADA practitioner, with an emphasis on drug addiction and recovery. She is Nationally Certified in Acupuncture and licensed by the Ohio Medical Board.

Yanming Huang, PhD, L.Ac

Yanming Huang studied at Hubei University of Chinese Medicine, Wuhan, China, for five years and received his medical degree as an honor student. After graduating from the medical university, he enrolled as a graduate student at Tongji Medical University, China. During his three year graduate program, YanMing completed his training and thesis to earn his Master of Medicine degree. For several years, he held a staff position as a physician at The Hospital of Tongji Medical University. Subsequently, Yanming left China to study at the University of Leuven, Belgium where he earned his Ph.D. in Medical Science. He is also licensed as an acupuncturist in Belgium.

He has published chapters in several books and over thirty original articles on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine in peer-reviewed journals.

Yanming is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), and licensed by the Ohio Medical Board as an acupuncturist. He has experience with patients who have diverse backgrounds and various conditions. He offers Acupuncture here at the Center for Integrative Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. Specialties include pain disorders, stress, menopause, infertility and other chronic conditions.

Tamara Macdonald, L.A.c.

Tamara holds a BA from the University of Hawaii, Manoa, an MA from Miami of Ohio in Oxford, a 4 year Doctorate in Natural Medicine and a 3 year Masters of Acupuncture from Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington. Additionally, she completed her Acupuncture studies in Chengdu, China. She is board certified through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture (NCCAOM), holds her Acupuncture License from the Ohio State Medical Board and her Naturopathic Physician License through the Washington State Department of Health. She is a member of the Ohio Chapter of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), and is the Cleveland Chapter President of the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA).

Tamara offers Acupuncture here at the Cleveland Clinic with an emphasis on pain management and women's health issues. Tamara enjoys incorporating a holistic approach in helping people achieve their health goals.

Jared West, L.A.c

Jared West obtained a bachelor's degree from Earlham College and a Masters level Acupuncture degree from the American Institute of Alternative Medicine where he graduated summa cum laude. He is certified as a Diplomate of Acupuncture by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). Jared is also a Licensed Acupuncturist by the Ohio State Medical Board. Jared currently serves on the executive board of the Ohio Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (OAAOM) where he is also a member. Jared was first introduced to Chinese Medicine in 1991 when he began studying qi gong and tai qi. He traveled to China in 1995 to continue this study. His appreciation for the breadth of Traditional Chinese Medicine continues to shape his practice today.

Jane Pernotto Ehrman, M.Ed.

Jane has a Master’s of Education in Health Education, from Pennsylvania State University, with an emphasis on Mind/Body Medicine. Her undergraduate degree is in Health Education, from Youngstown State University. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist, a National Board Certified Diplomat in Clinical Hypnotherapy and certified in Interactive Guided Imagery (sm) from the Academy for Guided Imagery. Jane completed Post Graduate course work at Case Western Reserve University and Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, Dept. of Child and Adolescent Behavioral Medicine, Cleveland, OH. And training at The Harvard Mind/Body Medical Institute in Boston, MA, and the Academy for Guided Imagery in Malibu, CA.

Jane is a national health consultant with 30 years of experience in health and wellness event planning, and program development. She has been a consultant, to The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals in Cleveland, OH to integrate Mind/Body Medicine into their medical departments. She is a research consultant to several universities, in Ohio, in the area of Mind/Body Medicine. Jane has published a series of guided imagery CD’s for a variety of health issues. Several have been used in research with very favorable outcomes. She is a frequent lecturer at the Case University Medical School, teaching Mind/Body Medicine to first and second year medical students.

Jane is the Mind/Body Coach at The Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Integrative Medicine in Broadview Heights, Ohio, practicing there since the Center opened in September 2004. In her practice, her focus is to help clients turn crisis into opportunities for healing and personal growth. Jane works with adults and children on a variety of issues, including: Child birthing and high-risk pregnancy, cancer treatment and recovery issues, chronic fatigue syndrome, lifestyle changes, life transition issues, pain management, performance anxiety for students, musicians and athletes, stress-related illness and conditions (headaches, irritable bowel, insomnia), and preparation for surgery.

As a practicing creative arts therapist, clinical social worker and advanced clinical hypnotherapist, Zivia Bairey specializes in the treatment of psychiatric disorders, physical illness, sexual abuse, trauma and weight management. Her experience includes agency-based as well as private consulting with individuals and their families.

Prior to joining the Center for Integrative Medicine, Zivia provided consultation services for state-run and private programs serving children with disabilities and their families. She directed a psychiatric facility, and served as an adjunct faculty member at the College of New Rochelle, NY. She also provided training to parents and pre-school teachers in the special education system.

Done Crone

Joan Chiaki Ishibashi, LMT

Joan has a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Sociology and minor in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska, a Master of Divinity Degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, Master of Library and Information Studies degree from University of Hawaii, a Diploma from the National Institute of Massotherapy and a Clinical Pastoral Education degree from Burlington County Memorial Hospital in New Jersey.

Joan is a licensed in massage therapy by the Ohio State Medical Board and a member of the American Massage Therapy Association. She has trained in Buddhist zazen meditation at Daihonzan Chosen-ji. She is also an adjunct faculty member in the Philosophy Department at Cuyahoga Community College. Joan has training in Hawaiian lomilomi and reiki. She incorporates these into her practice, which includes basic Swedish and therapeutic deep tissue.

Gary Mitchener, LMT

Gary possesses a Bachelor's degree from Pacific University, a Master's from Harvard University, Graduate traineeship from the National Science Foundation, and Clinical Pastoral Training at the University of California Hospital in San Francisco. He is licensed by the Ohio State Medical Board.

Gary provides chair massage in the Family Lounge of the Surgical Building of the main campus, primarily for members of families of patients having surgery, but also for staff, students, and others passing through the P Building, "It's a place where a lot of intense human drama takes place, and it is a profound privilege to be able to offer the healing gift of caring touch in such a charged environment."

Linda Teage, LMT

Linda has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from St. Louis University. She maintains her Ohio licensure as a Registered Nurse. She obtained certification in Massotherapy from Cuyahoga Community College and is licensed by the Ohio State Medical Board. She is a professional member of the American Massage Therapy Association. Linda practices basic Swedish massage as well as chair massage while incorporating other modalities such as trigger point therapy, myofascial release and muscle energy techniques. "I enjoy providing relaxation massage for stress relief as well as therapeutic massage to assist clients with musculoskeletal pain problems."

Rev. Mark Rogers-Berry, M.Div., Chaplain

Mark is a South Carolina native who came to the Cleveland Clinic to do supervisory training in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). He graduated from Wofford College (B.S. 2001), where he studied biology and played football. Then, he moved to Atlanta, GA, to attend Emory University’s Candler School of Theology (M.Div 2005). He completed his CPE residency at Grady Hospital System in Atlanta. Mark provides spiritual counseling at the Center for Integrative Medicine. The counseling is one-on-one and integrates a mind-body-spirit approach. The majority of Mark's time is spent at the Main Campus doing training and spiritual care. Mark is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Tom has completed post–graduate work at the Cognitive Therapy Institute in Ohio and an internship with the Wellness Institute in Seattle, Washington in Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy.

Tom guides individuals in exploring their inner potential to heal themselves of emotional distress such as depression and anxiety. He also helps individuals resolve trauma issues that contribute to unhealthy, undesirable, repetitive behaviors, compulsivity and addictions.

Berri L. Burns, RD, LD

Berri received a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio and was the Recipient of the Mary Eliza Parker Award for Excellence in Nutrition and Dietetics.

Berri joined the Cleveland Clinic in 1987 and has worn a multitude of hats throughout her career, including Sports Nutritionist for the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers and Northeast Ohio High Schools, Corporate Nutritionist, Weight Management Specialist, Neuro Science and Cardiac Dietitian. She is thrilled to work with individuals of ALL ages. Mostly recently, Berri has joined the Center for Integrative Medicine and Lifestyle 180. Throughout the course of her career, Berri has been passionate about being a nutrition coach, role model, and empowering her clients to maximize their body potential through proper fuel choices. Kristen Kirkpatrik,MS, RD, LD

Kristin Kirkpatrick is a Wellness Manager at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute, Department of Disease Reversal and oversees the nutrition component of Cleveland Clinic’s Lifestyle 180 program. Prior to her current position, Kristin worked for Cleveland Clinic Employee Wellness and was responsible for managing large scale wellness initiatives and projects throughout the Cleveland Clinic Health System. Kristin began her career in Washington, DC lobbying for Medical Nutrition Therapy reform with the American Dietetic Association’s Policy and Advocacy group. From there, she went on to become the Regional Coordinator of the NHLBI’s (National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute) Hearts N’ Parks program in Montgomery County, Maryland. During her time with Hearts N’ Parks, Kristin designed, implemented and measured health promotion programs within the Washington, DC metro area. She returned to Ohio and started working at Cleveland Clinic’s Department of Cardiovascular Genetics and entered into the University of Akron’s coordinated program in Dietetics.

Kristin has over 11 years of experience in the health management area, holds a Masters of Science in Health Promotion Management from American University in Washington, DC and a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science from The George Washington University in Washington, DC. Kristin is also licensed as a Registered Dietitian in the state of Ohio.

Carol J. Spears, M.S., Certified Reiki Master and Teacher, Certified Music Practitioner

Carol’s education includes Ph. D. program (Wildlife Ecology), Incomplete--Oregon State University 1979 – 1981, a Master of Science (Zoology), Oklahoma State University 1979, a Bachelor of Science (Biology), University of Akron 1977, an Associate (Medical Assistant), University of Akron 1973. She has received all of her Reiki training in Santa Barbara, California: Master Level, Usui Shiki Ryoho, taught by Gail Saunders, Santa Barbara, California, 2001; First and Second Degrees, 2000. Carol is a 2002 graduate of the Music for Healing and Transition Program (MHTP), Hillsdale, New York as a Certified Music Practitioner of the Harp. She is also a meditation instructor, teaching people mindfulness meditation techniques. Carol serves as a Board Member and a teacher for the MHTP. She is a founding member, and former Board member, of Mind, Body, Spirit Connected, which has merged with the American Holistic Medical Association.

Carol is the Reiki Practitioner for the Center For Integrative Medicine, and also teaches Reiki through the Center to the public and to healthcare professionals. October 2008 Carol retired from her 28-year career with the National Park Service to devote her full time work to Reiki and Therapeutic Music. Some examples of the type of work she has treated through the Clinic include: cancer patients, fertility patients, pre-and post-op patients, people with chronic disease or pain, stress-related conditions, emotional and psychological issues.

Judi is an Advanced Yoga Teacher, Certified Yoga Teacher, Reiki Master, Member of Yoga Alliance & International Association of Yoga Therapists. At the Cleveland Clinic she offers therapeutic yoga classes, yoga therapy sessions with emphasis on stress management, breathing, and help with chronic pain and illness.
