Overview

Microneedling is a noninvasive skin treatment that reduces the signs of aging with minimal downtime. The technique is somewhat similar to dermabrasion (but requires significantly less downtime). Using a topical anesthesia on your face is all that’s needed. No injections are required.

Small needles from a handheld device remove the very superficial layer of the skin and stimulate new collagen to form. This procedure plumps up your skin and improves your complexion, as well as fine lines. It’s generally recommended that you have treatments three to eight weeks apart. It can take three to six months for best results. Afterward, you may need this treatment once a year to maintain the results.

Why choose us?

When considering microneedling, choose a surgeon with significant experience performing the procedure. Friends, family members or an internist or primary care doctor are often helpful in suggesting the best surgeon.

For the best results, choose a cosmetic surgeon who’s affiliated with a major medical center, such as Cleveland Clinic. Make sure to ask your cosmetic surgeon about their credentials, training and how many procedures they’ve performed.

How to Prepare

How to Prepare

It’s best to discontinue exfoliant products (such as salicylic acid and Retin-A®) one week before the procedure. Discontinuing other anti-inflammatory products is optional.

If you use Accutane®, you should stop using it six months before microneedling. If you have a history of fever sores, you should take an antiviral product (such as VALTREX or Zovirax®) two days before and continuing after treatment. Please inform your provider if you’re currently taking or have taken any blood-thinning medication, as it may increase bleeding or bruising during and after the procedure.

What to Expect

What to Expect

Side effects after microneedling are mild, resulting in minimal downtime after treatment. You’ll have mild pinpoint bleeding during and immediately after the procedure. Typically, you’ll only have redness and swelling for up to five days after the procedure.

Moisturizer is applied immediately following microneedling. Usually, your skin is mildly red for about 24 hours. Most patients can resume their normal routines within a day.
