Breast Centers Awarded Accreditation

Cleveland Clinic Breast Centers at Main Campus and Beachwood Family Health Center have been awarded a three-year full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.

According to the surveyors, ”The Cleveland Clinic Breast Center provides comprehensive care to breast patients and the center is a remarkable program that clearly meets the standards for NAPBC accreditation."

Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. The standards include proficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.

Congratulations to the Breast Center for this achievement!

3-D Mammogram One of Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs for 2013

Cleveland Clinic asked more than 110 of its physicians and researchers: What breakthroughs will change patient care in the next year? 3-D mammography was one of the Clinic's top 10 medical breakthroughs for 2013. A version of 3-D mammography is currently in clinical trials at Cleveland Clinic, but not available yet to all patients. Experts expect 3-D to replace 2-D in the not-too-distant future.

Breast Center Announces New Director

Dr. Stephen Grobmyer has joined Cleveland Clinic as director of the Main Campus Breast Center, and Section Head for the institution's Surgical Oncology program. Dr. Grobmyer is a breast surgeon and surgical oncologist who came from the University of Florida at Gainesville where he was Director of the Shands Breast Center. Major focus areas for Dr. Grobmyer center on multidisciplinary care for cancer patients and optimal combinations of treatments for cancer patients, as treatment often involves surgery, radiation and medical therapy. Other areas of emphasis will include enrolling patients in clinical trials, an expanded role for genetics in how treatments are selected, and continuing to improve the experience of the cancer patient – from early diagnosis, through treatment and recovery.

Cleveland Clinic Breast Center offers a multidisciplinary team of highly skilled specialists who provide comprehensive care to patients with breast cancer. Here, you will find a full array of services, from initial screening and diagnosis to innovative breast cancer treatment and supportive counseling.

This year 180,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 43,500 will die. Although these numbers may sound frightening, research reveals that the mortality rate could decrease by 30% if all women age 50 and older in need of a mammogram had one. Additionally, if detected early, breast cancer has a five-year survival rate of over 95%.
