The Clinical Engineering Research group is composed of PhD level biomedical and software engineers and engineering students. The group works closely with the Information Systems Group and Clinical Engineering on operational projects involving combinations of both software and hardware. Cooperation with the ARKS team centers on the development and maintenance of interfaces for patient monitors, anesthesia machines, and other anesthesia instrumentation. The Clinical Engineering Research group also provides technical support for clinical research performed by departments within the Anesthesia Institute including Outcomes Research.
In addition to operational support, Clinical Engineering Research seeks external funding for long-term research projects that are generally beyond the scope of day-to-day support covered by the other engineering groups. These projects focus on the application of advanced equipment and technology to improve peri-operative patient care.
Research Interests Include:
- Automated collection and charting of clinical information
- Technology assisted forecasting of clinical events
- Clinical application of new technology
- Device interoperability
- Electromagnetic interference and artifact
