Dr. Sessler attended medical school at Columbia University, and subsequently completed pediatric and anesthesia residencies at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Outcomes Research at Cleveland Clinic.
The Outcomes Research Collaboration, which Dr. Sessler founded, includes 100 investigators in ten countries. Outcomes Research currently coordinates more than a hundred studies, including half-a-dozen large, multi-center outcome trials. Dr. Sessler has published a book on therapeutic hypothermia and more than 430 full research papers; 150 of his papers were in Anesthesiology.
Dr. Sessler has trained 60 research fellows, four of whom subsequently chaired departments of Anesthesiology. He has been invited and performed lectures at 250 institutions and has been a principal or co-investigator on grants exceeding $20 million, more than $14 million of which was from NIH and other peer-reviewed sources. A few of his notable awards include the Fulbright Fellowship and the 2002 American Society of Anesthesiology Excellence in Research prize.
Dr. Sessler’s administrative work includes two stints as acting-chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Louisville. He was also Vice Dean and Associate Vice President for Health Affairs at the University of Louisville, granting him responsibility for research throughout the Health Sciences Campus. During his five years at the University of Louisville, he tripled the NIH funding to the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Nursing.

Andrea Kurz, M.D. attended the University of Vienna School of Medicine (1983–1987), and completed an anesthesia residency and fellowship at the University of Vienna (1987–1993). She became a research fellow in the Outcomes Research Consortium Laboratory in San Francisco and an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the University of California in San Francisco (1993–1996).
She was Professor of Anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesia and General Intensive Care at the University of Vienna. Dr. Kurz was an Associate Professor of Anesthesia at Washington University in St. Louis for four years, where she directed the Department of Anesthesia Clinical Research Center.
Dr. Kurz went on to chair the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Bern for four years, during a period of extraordinary research productivity for the Department. Dr. Kurz is now Vice Chair, Department of Outcomes Research at Cleveland Clinic.
