Providing the Evidence for Evidence-Based Medicine
The Department of Outcomes Research is the clinical research center for the Anesthesiology Institute at Cleveland Clinic. Most research for the clinical department is coordinated by Outcomes Research, which is anesthesiology’s largest single-site clinical research unit. We are most interested in simple and low-risk interventions that markedly improve the outcome of surgery and anesthesia by keeping surgical patients warm, optimizing anesthetic management, and improving postoperative care.
The Department’s mission is to be acknowledged as the world’s leading clinical anesthesia research site. We aspire to:
- Publish more high-impact, peer-reviewed clinical research papers (quantified as number multiplied by impact) than any other anesthesia department.
- Recruit more extra-mural clinical research funding than any other anesthesia department, with “clinical research” being defined as research conducted with human subjects.
- Train clinical investigators, including residents, fellows, and staff throughout Cleveland Clinic Healthcare System.
The Department is the administrative center for the international Outcomes Research Consortium. The group includes about 100 investigators in 10 countries who have appointments at 20 universities. It is anesthesiology’s largest academic research organization. The group typically runs about 100 simultaneous studies while publishing about 60 full papers each year, including many published in high-profile journals.
