Providing the Evidence for Evidence-Based Medicine
The Department of Outcomes Research is the clinical research center for the Anesthesiology Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. Most research for the clinical departments is coordinated by Outcomes Research. It is anesthesiology’s largest single-site clinical research unit. We are most interested in simple, low-risk, and low-risk interventions that markedly improve the outcome of surgery and anesthesia. Examples include keeping surgical patients warm, optimizing anesthetic management, and improving postoperative care.
The Department’s mission is to be the acknowledged world’s leading clinical anesthesia research site. To that end, we aspire to:
- Publish more high-impact, peer-reviewed clinical research papers (quantified as number times impact) than any other anesthesia department.
- Recruit more extra-mural clinical research funding than any other anesthesia department, with “clinical research” being defined as research conducted with human subjects.
- Train clinical investigators including residents, fellows, and Staff throughout the Cleveland Clinic Healthcare System.
The Department is the administrative center for the international Outcomes Research Consortium. The group includes about a 100 investigators in 10 countries who have appointments in 20 universities. It is anesthesiology’s largest Academic Research Organization. The group typically runs about a 100 simultaneous studies and publishes about 60 full papers per year, including many in high-profile journals.
