Biography

About Daniel Martin, MD

Daniel F. Martin, MD is Chair of the Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute, the Barbara and A. Malachi Mixon III Institute Chair in Ophthalmology, and Professor of Ophthalmology in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.  Dr. Martin completed medical school at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine followed by residency and chief residency in ophthalmology at Emory University School of Medicine.  He completed a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery and Diseases at Duke University Eye Center followed by a two-year fellowship in Uveitis and Ocular Immunology at the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health.  From 1993 to 2008, Dr. Martin served on the faculty of the Emory University School of Medicine, ultimately as tenured professor and as the Thomas M. Aaberg Professor of Ophthalmology.  In 2008, Dr. Martin was appointed Chair of the Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute and continues in that role today.

Dr. Martin’s primary research interest is in clinical trials and the evaluation of new treatments for retinal diseases.  Dr. Martin serves as the Study Chair for the Comparison of AMD Treatments Trials (CATT) and also serves as the Network Chair for the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network (DRCR). He has previously served as principal investigator for many AMD, diabetes, and uveitis trials including AREDS, SOCA, and MUST, and has served on numerous Data and Safety Monitoring Boards and Steering Committees.  Dr Martin was extensively involved in the development of the ganciclovir implant and later valganciclovir for the treatment of CMV retinitis, serving as Study Chair for the clinical trials that resulted in FDA approval of both of these drugs.  He has published more than 180 peer-reviewed articles, delivered 28 named lectures, and delivered more than 320 invited lectures.  Dr. Martin has been the recipient of numerous awards including the 74th Edward Jackson Memorial Lecture at the 2017 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO); the Senior Honor Award and Secretariat Award from the AAO; the Pyron Award, the Crystal Apple Award and Senior Honor Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS); the Rosenthal Award and the Gass Medal from the Macula Society; the Sam and Maria Miller Award for Scientific Achievement in Clinical Research from the Cleveland Clinic; and the Cless Medal.  Dr Martin has previously served on the Board of Governors for the Cleveland Clinic.

Very Good is not good enough. Dr. Martin and his staff are outstanding in every way. They have saved my eyesight since 2012!!!!!!! I am 91 and able to enjoy being an artist since I was 11 years old! They have given me some extra time!

Dr. Martin is dedicated to providing the best possible care to his patients. He uses his tremendous knowledge and experience to diagnose and treat their eye disease, and he consistently offers education, support, compassion, respect, and gentle humor along with his medical and surgical skills. Dr. Martin has controlled my retinal disease and has patiently answered my questions for many years. There are not enough superlatives to describe Dr. Martin's status as a fine physician and a good person he is simply the best! I'm so thankful to have him as my doctor.

Dr. Martin embodies the best possible qualities there could be in a physician. He Is a truly brilliant doctor with an amazing fund of knowledge. He is kind, trustworthy, and caring. He always takes time to communicate fully and respectfully to his patients. He listens carefully and is easy to talk with. He explains his diagnosis and treatment and the ways in which an eye problem may affect or be affected by other medical issues faced by the patient.
