Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery

The Center for Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery is a driver in innovation procedures and patient care. Learn more from our experts.

Watch the 2 videos below to learn about what Prostate Surgery entails, and options for treatment.

The Center has one of the world’s largest bodies of collective experience in urologic laparoscopic and robotic surgery. By pioneering and perfecting minimally invasive surgical procedures, researching new ideas and providing education, Cleveland Clinic urologists are committed to providing state-of-the-art patient care through a unique partnership with subspecialties within the Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute.

Urologists in the section of Robotic & Laparoscopic Surgery are continuing to be at the forefront of minimally invasive patient care, research and education. Techniques in robotic and laparoscopic surgery that have been developed and perfected in the laboratory and pioneered in the operating rooms have become the gold standard of urology practice, employed in everything from prostate, bladder, and kidney cancer surgeries to adrenal surgery.

Cleveland Clinic was one of the nation's first medical centers to offer minimally invasive surgical treatment for prostate cancer: robotic radical prostatectomy. Now, robotic-assisted surgery is enabling surgeons to perform this complex minimally invasive surgery with more precision, offering patients improved outcomes. We have performed over 3,500 robotic and laparoscopic prostatectomy procedures to date and continue to be the leaders in the prostatectomy field.

Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute was also the first medical center in Ohio to perform laparoscopic radical surgery for kidney disease, beginning in 1997. The Clinic now offers robotic and laparoscopic options for a majority of kidney diseases and has, by far, the most experience with laparoscopic kidney surgery for cancer in the United States. To date, the Urological and Kidney Institute laparoscopic team has performed this laparoscopic kidney surgery more than 3000 times in both benign and malignant diseases. Robotic Partial nephrectomy techniques developed at the Cleveland Clinic are taught nationwide with the largest experience in the world of almost 1000 cases.

Cleveland Clinic urologists performed the world's first laparoscopic removal of a cancerous bladder, followed by surgery to reconstruct the bladder out of intestinal tissue. Developed by a Cleveland Clinic urologist, our team first refined this technique in the laboratory and now offers the reconstructive bladder cancer surgery for patients. In addition to treating bladder cancer, laparoscopic bladder surgery can also be used to treat urinary incontinence.

Robotic and Laparoscopic surgery is an appealing option for patients for many reasons, including:

  • Reduced hospital stay and faster healing
  • Less postoperative pain and less need for pain medication
  • Quicker return to normal activity and work
  • Smaller incisions and less scarring
  • Preservation of erectile function

Highlights of the Laparoscopic and Robotic Prostate Surgery program:

  • First to offer laparoscopic radical prostatectomy on a routine basis in the United States
  • One of the first prostate programs to perform robotic radical prostatectomy in the United States
  • First to perform robotic sural nerve transplant for potency preservation
  • Pioneered "energy-free" prostatectomy to preserve erections after prostate surgery
  • Pioneered real-time ultrasound navigation to make prostatectomy a more precise form of prostate surgery
  • Performed the technique for Single port belly button approach for single port robotic radical prostatectomy

Highlights of the Laparoscopic and Robotic Kidney Surgery program:

  • Largest Experience in the country
  • Refined Technique for centrally located kidney tumors
  • First to perform robotic partial nephrectomy in a kidney transplant kidney tumor
  • Large experience in partial nephrectomy for multiple tumors in the same kidney or bilateral tumors

Highlights of the Laparoscopic and Robotic Bladder Surgery program:

  • First to perform laparoscopic intracorporeal urinary diversion
  • Developed a technique for robotic intracorporeal formation of a new bladder from bowel after bladder removal for cancer

Highlights of the Single Port Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery program:

  • Developed novel techniques for belly button surgery for kidney, prostate and bladder surgery
  • Defined the initial technique of using robotics for single port surgery
  • Performed more than 150 single port surgeries

Highlights of the Stereotactic and Kidney Cryoablation Surgery program:

  • One of the largest experiences in the nation with kidney ablation
  • Developed stereotactic techniques to improve needle positioning during kidney tumor ablation
