Cleveland Clinic’s diversity pipeline programs are designed to engage talented college students interested in future careers within the healthcare industry. Through our STEMM programs, participants gain team-based experiential learning, problem-solving expertise, professional etiquette skills, career information and coaching/mentoring from medical and business professionals.

Our goal is to foster the continuing education and development of talent and to present Cleveland Clinic as a great place to work and grow.

Aspiring Physicians and Research Scientists Conference

As an initiative of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Aspiring Physicians & Research Scientists Conference is a two-day enhancement program to empower, inspire, and engage undergraduate students from HBCUs, HACU/HSIs, and other colleges/universities across Northeast Ohio and beyond. It is designed to increase pipeline representation of American Indian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander students looking to pursue careers in medicine as physicians and research scientists or physician investigators.

Conference programming is specifically tailored to support participants’ professional development and knowledge of science, innovation, and world-class care. Students will learn tips for applying to medical school, achieving success in the healthcare field, and have the opportunity to showcase research while competing for scholarship dollars.

2021 Conference Information

The 11th Annual Aspiring Physicians and Research Scientists Conference is scheduled to take place virtually on Thursday, May 20, 2021 and Friday, May 21, 2021.

During the conference, Cleveland Clinic physicians and research scientists will lead presentations and breakout sessions to provide attendees a unique opportunity to interface with our world-renowned Staff, Residents/Fellows, and Medical Students. The conference itinerary is comprised of presentations to support personal and professional development, matriculation to medical or graduate school, and successful transition to a STEMM career.

  • Apply now – The application deadline is April 21, 2021.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in a college/university (or a recent graduate), and interested in pursuing a career as a physician or researcher. Students must submit an online application including a 350-word essay by Friday, April 21, 2021. Students selected to participate in the conference will be notified of acceptance via email on April 23, 2021.

Please note: Participants commit to attending all scheduled virtual seminars and must have computer video/microphone capability.

Scholarship Opportunity: Abstract Poster Competition

Students interested in participating in a research scholarship competition must also submit a 250-word abstract of their proposed research poster via the online application by Friday, April 21, 2021. Research students accepted to compete and present their posters will be notified via e-mail on Friday, April 23, 2021.

Scholarship awards are presented to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in the following amounts:

  • First Place: $2,000
  • Second Place: $1,500
  • Third Place: $1,000

Poster Content Guidelines

The poster should be sufficient to technically explain and illustrate the research project to the audience and the judges. Presenters should carefully critique the content and arrangement of their posters. The flow of information in the poster layout should be done in a way that easily reveals the research process and addresses significant points.

It is recommended that the poster contain (at minimum) the following sections:

  • Abstract
  • Introduction
  • Research and Methods
  • Results
  • Conclusion
  • References

The data should be clear, concise and well-organized.

Students selected to present their research must submit a completed one-page poster in a PDF or PowerPoint file to diversity@ccf.org by Friday, May 7, 2021.

Presentation Guidelines

Presenters will be given five minutes to make an oral presentation followed by five minutes of questions and answers from the panel of judges. Presenters will be judged on the appearance/clarity of the poster, research and methods, oral presentation, and ability to answer questions.

Join the job interest community for individuals who have participated in Cleveland Clinic's diversity pipeline programs or relationship-building activities with Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) and Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) hosted by the Office of Diversity & Inclusion.

Pipeline to Professional Alumni Association (PPAA)

The PPAA serves as a connector that impacts and engages current and past participants of Diversity Pipeline Programs while fostering, maintaining and supporting a mutually beneficial relationship between its alumni and Cleveland Clinic to attract, develop, and retain talent.
