Dr. Mariel Manlapaz was born in Manila, Philippines. She went to college at Stanford University, where she received a BS degree in Biological Sciences. She earned her medical degree from the University of California, Irvine, and completed her anesthesia residency training and a cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. She has been faculty at the Cleveland Clinic Department of Anesthesia since 2006. Dr. Manlapaz has a particular interest in the care of high acuity surgical patients and residency education. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three sons and traveling to different parts of the world.
Dr. Manlapaz has fifteen years of anesthesia experience, with a particular interest in neurosurgical, complex spine, and liver transplant patients. She has authored articles in neurosurgery, orthopedic, and anesthesia journals and presented at the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting. Her involvement in the anesthesia department has included continuous improvement, directing anesthesia practice in radiology. Dr. Manlapaz also established a protocol for enhanced recovery after complex spine surgery and collaborations for comprehensive perioperative optimization. She is an active member of the Anesthesia Operations Team that oversees anesthesia staffing and OR resource allocation.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Manlapaz created and is the Perioperative Medicine fellowship program director and is an associate program director for the Anesthesia Residency Program. She is deeply passionate about incorporating diversity and inclusion programs in the curriculum and diversification of educational platforms for residents. She has been a recipient of the Anesthesiologist of the Year Award. Dr. Manlapaz is due to finish her Master’s in Education for Health Professions in the summer of 2021.
Dr. Manlapaz is active in the community serving as one of the leaders in the SWAT initiative (Supporting Women of Anesthesia Institute to Thrive) and the "She Thrives" annual workshop for anesthesia faculty professional development. She has also been a tutor/mentor for Refugee Response, working with middle school Syrian refugees.
