Biography

About Ruth Lagman, MD

Ruth Lagman, MD, was born in Manilla, Philippines. She finished her Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of the Philippines in 1982. She obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Santo Tomas, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, in Manila in 1986. She then spent a clinical-internship year followed by a brief stint as a volunteer physician in rural Philippines. Her experience in rural Philippines motivated her to pursue a master’s degree in Public Health at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University with a concentration in the epidemiology of infectious disease. The degree was conferred in 1993 upon completion of her master's thesis.

Dr. Lagman did her internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Conn., from 1990-1993. She then returned home to the Philippines and spent a year teaching at the College of Medicine at Angeles University in Pampanga, Philippines. In 1995, she entered the clinical fellowship program in Palliative Care at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. She then spent the next few years in private practice, in general internal medicine in the greater Chicago area.

She returned to Cleveland, Ohio, in July 2001 to join the medical staff of the Harry R. Horvitz Center for Palliative Medicine, Department of Hematology and Oncology, at Cleveland Clinic. She also has been appointed Director of Clinical Services of the Palliative Medicine program, and Medical Director of the Hospice of Cleveland Clinic. Her interests are music therapy and complementary and alternative medicine.

Dr. Lagman enjoys traveling, swimming and golf. She is married to Yew Sing Thomas Lee, an associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists may collaborate with the pharmaceutical or medical device industries to help develop medical breakthroughs or provide medical expertise or education. Cleveland Clinic strives to make scientific advances that will benefit patient care and support outside relationships that promise public benefit. In order for the discoveries of Cleveland Clinic physicians' and scientists' laboratories and investigations to benefit the public, these discoveries must be commercialized in partnership with industry. As experts in their fields, Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists are often sought after by industry to consult, provide expertise and education.

To assure professional and commercial integrity in such matters, Cleveland Clinic maintains a program that reviews these collaborations and, when appropriate, puts measures in place to minimize bias that may result from ties to industry. Cleveland Clinic publicly discloses the names of companies when (i) its physicians/scientists receive $5,000 or more per year (or, in rare cases, equity or stock options) for speaking and consulting, (ii) its physicians/scientists serve as a fiduciary, (iii) its physicians/scientists receive or have the right to receive royalties or (iv) its physicians/ scientists hold any equity interest for the physician's/scientist's role as inventor, discoverer, developer, founder or consultant.* In publicly disclosing this information, Cleveland Clinic tries to provide information as accurately as possible about its physicians' and scientists' connections with industry.

As of 2/15/2023, Dr. Lagman has reported no financial relationship with industry that is applicable to this listing. In general, patients should feel free to contact their doctor about any of the relationships and how the relationships are overseen by Cleveland Clinic. Public Health Service-Reportable Financial Conflicts of Interest. Cleveland Clinic scientists and physicians engage in basic, translational and clinical research activities, working to solve health problems, enhance patient care and improve quality of life for patients. Interactions with industry are essential to bringing the researchers' discoveries to the public, but can present the potential for conflicts of interest related to their research activities. Dr. Lagman is very attentive and talked to me. Many doctors expect the elderly to do as they are told, who consider us to be senile. Dr. Lagman is very respectful. I appreciate her.
