About John Rickard, MD

John Rickard, MD, MPH, is a specialist in treating cardiac (heart) rhythm disorders in the Section of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing in the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic. He is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology.

Specialty interests: Cardiac resynchronization (pacemaker) therapy, including optimization of nonresponders to cardiac resynchronization therapy (improving the condition of patients with heart failure who do not respond to pacemaker therapy); laser lead extraction; pulmonary vein isolation

Number of Patients: Dr. Rickard has performed more than 500 electrophysiology procedures throughout his career.

Education and Training: Dr. Rickard earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C., and a master’s in public health specializing in clinical effectiveness from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Boston, Mass.  Dr. Rickard completed his residency in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C., followed by fellowships in cardiovascular medicine and electrophysiology at Cleveland Clinic.

He was assistant Professor of Medicine in Cardiology and Electrophysiology at John Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, Md., and the Director and Founder of the Johns Hopkins Cardiac Resynchronization Optimization Clinic before joining Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Rickard was named to the Cleveland Clinic medical staff in 2015.

Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. Rickard has been published extensively in medical journals as the author or coauthor of nearly 50 articles related to his research in cardiac rhythm disorders and resynchronization therapy. He has presented his research findings at national medical meetings, including the American College of Cardiology and Heart Rhythm Society annual meetings, and has coauthored chapters on heart rhythm disorders and treatment in medical textbooks. Dr. Rickard completed a review of the use of cardiac resynchronization therapy for the Center for Medicare Services. This review will help define new Medicare coverage for patients who require pacing-capable devices.

Dr. Rickard is on top of my heart issue. I monitor my Afib every week and he said if anything crops up just to message him on My Chart and he will get things moving on his end. As busy as he must be he displays concern for my well being like I'm the only person he treats. In addition, I know someone has my back so to speak. I'm lucky to have a doctor of his caliber caring for me.

Both my wife and I met simultaneously with Dr Rickard. We both found him to be thorough, knowledgeable and professional. He had hand written notes that he assemble the night before because he said "I would never be able to do this prior to meeting with my patients the same day as the appointment. He reviewed test results, asked pertinent questions regarding any symptoms, discussed potential corrective actions and an overall assessment.
