Frank DiFilippo, PhD, is Director of Nuclear Imaging Physics in the Department of Nuclear Medicine in the Cleveland Clinic Imaging Institute. As a medical physicist, his specialty interest is in nuclear medicine instrumentation and image processing for single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. A current focus is in multi-modality imaging combining anatomic imaging with x-ray computed tomography (CT) with molecular imaging, using hybrid PET-CT and SPECT-CT scanners.
A native of the Cleveland area, Dr. DiFilippo attended the Case Western Reserve University and graduated with a B.S. degree in physics, where he received the Case Alumni Association Prize for the best academic record for a graduating senior and the Lubrizol Prize in Physics as best graduating physics student. He received his Ph.D. degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under a prestigious National Science Foundation fellowship and a departmental Compton fellowship.
Dr. DiFilippo was appointed to the Cleveland Clinic Department of Nuclear Medicine in 2002. He holds an academic appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and a joint appointment to the Cleveland Clinic Department of Biomedical Engineering. Prior to his appointment to the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. DiFilippo worked as Director of Technology Development of the Cleveland biomedical device company BIOMEC, Inc. Previously he had been a senior scientist in the Nuclear Medicine Division of Picker International (presently Philips Medical Systems) in Highland Heights, Ohio, where he designed and developed components of SPECT and PET imaging systems.
As principal or co-investigator of numerous research projects, Dr. DiFilippo’s research focuses on techniques to optimize PET and SPECT imaging for cardiac, oncologic, and other applications. He has been principal investigator on several research grants from the National Institutes of Health, most recently for development of high-resolution imaging of small animals for basic research. From his prior work in industry, he has been named as primary inventor or co-inventor on seventeen patents. Named in Crain’s Cleveland Business as one of the “Leaders in Technology,” Dr. DiFilippo had been named by Industry Week as one of the “50 R&D Stars to Watch.”
He has written articles and abstracts on his specialty interests and clinical research in leading peer-reviewed publications including the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, Medical Physics, the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology, and Physical Review Letters.
Dr. DiFilippo is a member of the Society of Nuclear Medicine, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
