About Karen Cooper, DO

Karen Cooper, DO is a primary care physician who specializes in obesity medicine and its associated diseases.  She is Director of Weight Management in the Women’s Health Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, in Cleveland, Ohio, and holds an academic appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, of Case Western Reserve University. 

Dr. Cooper specializes in the evaluation, diagnostic testing and treatment of excessive and chronic weight gain in women. She pioneered the field in 2006, serving as the medical support for bariatric surgery patients at the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute of the Cleveland Clinic for seven years. Dr. Cooper then transitioned to the Women’s Health Institute, focusing on weight gain in pregnancy, polycystic ovarian syndrome, female infertility, menopause and metabolic disease states (hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary artery disease, obstructive sleep apnea, and more). 

An advocate for wellness, she has presented extensively on the topic of Obesity management via television and social media and is featured on the Cleveland Clinic’s Let’s Move It and Express Care websites. She has been an invited lecturer at many local, national and international medical education conferences and has published several journal articles and a book chapter on Obesity management. Dr. Cooper is passionate about community outreach programs and engages in many public health programs, often with medical students to enhance their learning and training skills. Her international medical mission trips have included Guyana, Jamaica, Peru, Ghana, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Most recently, through the Mandel School of Social Sciences, she was one of three faculty members in Antigua, Guatemala, interacting with schools, city council and community leaders on child welfare and gender equality.

Dr. Cooper received the award for Innovation in 2008 for her idea regarding pannus support.  In 2017, she launched the first virtual shared medical appointment program at the Cleveland Clinic, in the Women’s Health Institute, for weight management and has had tremendous success. She serves on the steering committee for the Cleveland Clinic Physicians Diversity Scholar program and mentors aspiring students within the medical school, in the community and within her practice. She was recently selected as an honoree to acknowledge her contribution to the health and well-being of women, at the annual One Hundred Black Men gala.  She has also been selected for recognition this year, as an accomplished Physician and Medical Educator by the American Health Council.

Dr. Cooper earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, and her medical degree at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, New York. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. Currently completing a master’s degree in Public Health at Case Western University, she expects to utilize her increased knowledge within Community Outreach and Population Health management programs.
